Two changes in the team which fared so badly at Hayes were made by Golders Green for their Easter Saturday home League fixture with Enfield, F. Boston and B. Weaver displacing Sandrock and Marcantonio.
These two alterations made a difference to the side, who beat Enfield by a clear-cut margin. Weaver played a strong game at centre-half, and contributed much to the strength of the defence. Also finding time to put through some excellent passes to his wing men and up the centre, Weaver played one of his best games of the season. F. Boston appeared to have made a complete recovery from his injury, and his forceful play had a marked effect on the fortunes of the game and the result of the match.
The middle line, with Bucci happier at right-half and F.W. Davis in excellent form on the other flank, soon asserted its superiority, and although Enfield had quite a good share of the game, particularly in midfield play, Golders Green were always more dangerous.
One of the outstanding deficiences shown by the Enfield forwards was their palpable weakness in front of the goalmouth. For all that, Barlow had a good deal of work to perform, and on one or two occasions he was even hard-pressed, but W. Boston and Caswell protected him well. W. Boston played in a particularly confident manner.
Enfield won the toss, but Golders Green soon attacked and forced a corner, which was cleared, and the visitors went down the field for Stevens to shoot wide. Golders Green did most of the pressing, and some lively work by the halves and the forwards kept the Enfield defence busy. Riches saved a good shot from Breagan before F. Boston headed outside.
After making a good save from Knight, Barlow had to punch out a hard back pass from W. Boston, and fortunately the ball went to Caswell, who cleared. Sexton came into prominence with some nice passes, and one such move ended with Walker getting offside. Then the centre-forward headed another pass only just wide of the post.
The scoring was opened after 34 minutes by SEXTON. From a throw-in Bucci gave to Breagan, and from his pass the inside-right put in a grand cross-shot, which beat Riches rather easily.
From the re-start, mistakes by Weaver and Caswell nearly allowed Enfield to equalise, but Constable shot wide. Then Enfield gained a corner, and the ball remained in the goalmouth for some time before the danger was cleared. Weaver dealt with an awkward looking centre, and Sexton put the Golders Green forwards away with a nice pass, following which good combined work on the right brought play well into the Enfield penalty area. The ball was cleared, but Weaver gained possession : Webster made a grand pass to F. Boston, who gave to Walker. From Walker the ball went to Sexton, who left BREAGAN with a fine opening, and the outside-right made no mistake.
Enfield tried to rally, but Caswell stopped a movement, and just before half-time - which came with the score at 2-0 - Golders Green force a corner through Boston, with no result.
With F. Boston nearly netting in the opening seconds of the second half, his fine shot going just a shade too high, it seemed that the Golders Green forwards were still goal-hungry, and so it proved, although they were kept in check by more resolute defence which was offered by Enfield. Following that narrow escape, Breagan again hit the top of the bar after trapping a good pass by Sexton, and when the ball rebounded, Rawlings headed out F. Boston's shot from under the bar.
Now it was Enfield's turn, and during a brief respite their forwards swept down the field. Davis stopped Stevens, but when Breagan was robbed, Davis missed the ball, and Bucci had to run in and kick into touch. Webster sent Golders Green away, and Boston put Walker through, but he lost the ball when tackled desperately just in time.
A ding-dong battle developed, for Enfield strained every muscle to get within shooting distance. A corner on the right was cleared, and then Golders Green launched a heavy attack, Boston and Breagan getting very near.
Davis soon recovered after being hurt and receiving attention. After an attack by Enfield had been repulsed, Webster did some useful preparatory work which was spoilt by F. Boston sending the ball over the top with a hard drive. At the other end Boatwright was just as kind in shooting wide, and then Sexton had a chance from a free-kick, but he failed to connect.
The final goal of this game came in the 23rd minute of the half, following good work by Bucci, who went through beautifully with the ball and put Breagan in possession. From the winger's centre WALKER, who was close in, headed through.
Returning to the attack, Golders Green nearly scored a fourth through the medium of Sexton. Breagan had nipped in sharply to rob Fairbairn, worked his way past another defender and crossed to Sexton, whose shot went wide of the mark. Sexton made amends by combining well with Bucci and Breagan a little later, but Walker spoilt the movement by getting offside.
Just before the final whistle Enfield were awarded a free-kick, as a result of which Boatwright and Cole just missed. Enfield never gave up trying, but Golders Green continued to have the better of the game, which they deserved because of their more polished, superior type of football.
