A score of one-all was the outcome of Golders Green's visit to Barking on Saturday, the scorers being Leahy for Golders Green and Mahoney for Barking; but the result would have been full points for Golders Green if the story of the game had not been one of missed chances.
On their form in the early stages Golders Green should have been the victors; but a weak moment in the rearguard let the home left winger through to beat Barlow, and though Golders Green soon equalised, they lost much of their punch. The wingers (Leahy and F. Boston) worked hard all the time, and both delivered the goods in the shape of excellent centres, but many of these were not taken advantage of inside.
Golders Green had considerable spells of foraging in front of the Barking goal - in fact they had quite an equal share of the play in the first half and possibly more in the second - but there was a lack of forcefulness against a clever Barking defence.
Barlow, in the Golders Green goal, had plenty of work from time to time, and more than made amends for the goal he let through in the first half. W. Boston was the culprit whose failure led to Barking's goal, but after this he worked well, though he was hardly a match for the speedy Mahoney. Caswell was not so sure as he has been.
The one change in the Golders Green team was the inclusion of G. Marrable at left-half in place of H. Sharp, who was forced to " cry off " at the last minute owing to an ankle injury. There were times when it seemed that Sharp was missed, but Marrable quite justified his place as deputy. Broadis, showing a lively appreciation of the danger of Clements, the Barking centre-forward, clung to him so tenaciously, while Breagan's value was felt all over the field. Browne and Walker, the inside forwards, achieved nothing spectacular, though there was little actual fault to be placed at their door, but the weakness was at centre-forward.
Barking fielded a team unchanged since the previous match at Golders Green. Hillman and Mahoney, on the wings, were fast and clever, Foreman gave a fine performance at inside-left, and Clements was the type of centre-forward whom Golders Green need to complete their team. Richardson, at centre-half, was consistently sound, and Wilson, in goal, brought off many grand saves.
The first attack of any danger came from Barking, when Clements broke through and, close to goal, passed to Foreman, but Browne put him off his shot. Clements brought the ball back and shot, but missed the mark. Then Mahoney sent the ball to the centre of goal, but Barlow held it, and when Mahoney had another try, he drove yards wide.
A free-kick gave Golders Green an advantage, and led to an attack in which Walker came within scoring distance, but he was robbed by Clarke. Wilson leapt high to stop a shot from Stovell. There was a nice effort when Marrable took a pass from Walker and pushed it out to Boston, but the ball ran too far ahead and Boston's chance failed.
There was some lovely passing on the Barking right wing, and the Golders Green defence were not watching Mahoney enough on the left. Hillman drove in a good shot which struck the wrong side of the post.
Barking's passing was a feature of the game, but Golders Green were adopting a good open style of play.
After fifteen minutes W. Boston let Mahoney through with a clear run to goal. Barlow came out to meet him and picked the ball up from his shot, but dropped it again, and MAHONEY slipped past him to find the net.
Hereabouts Clarke was injured and had to leave the field. He returned before the interval, but was incapacitated and was moved from back to outside-right.
Browne and Leahy both reached Wilson, but could not beat him, and F. Boston placed a shot a trifle too high. Boston and Stovell forced Richardson to give away a corner, but this was unproductive.
Then Marrable started the movement which gave Golders Green their equaliser. He sent Walker away with the ball, and he passed out to LEAHY, who ran close to his corner before turning in a beautiful shot, the ball landing in the far corner of the net.
Soon afterwards Golders Green were awarded another free-kick, taken from near the centre of the field by Broadis, but the ball swerved outside the posts, though at the right height. Golders Green gained another corner following a nice dropping shot from W. Boston, who came up past the halfway line. This ended with Wilson saving from F. Boston. Marrable also took a shot before Barking broke away again. A sharp attack on the right failed, and Golders Green returned to the attack, Leahy having hard luck with a header from a pass by F. Boston.
At the other end Foreman had a good shot saved by Barlow, and Mahoney also let drive, but the ball went wide of the mark. A free-kick taken by Clements, just outside the penalty area, went over the crossbar.
When Golders Green pressed again F. Boston swung in a well-timed centre, from which Marrable shot over the top. Breagan tested Wilson without success, and Walker drove outside the posts after working well for an opening. Close on half-time F. Boston struck the crossbar, and the interval arrived with the score still one-all.
After the change of ends, Barking played [with] ten men, Clarke being unfit to return. Golders Green tried hard for the lead, and Leahy nearly provided the goal when he shot low down and Wilson missed the ball, but Godwin cleared. It was a close thing for Barking.
Golders Green did a great deal of attacking throughout this half, but Barking were the more dangerous when they broke away. Mahoney missed the net by inches only with an unstoppable shot, and there was frequent danger from Hillman, but Broadis' close attention to Clements nullified some of the excellent centring by the wingers.
Another of Leahy's passes might have gained Golders Green the victory, but there was no one close enough up to finish it off.
At one time Golders Green were all round the Barking goal, and Wilson had a busy few minutes before offside relieved the pressure. Then Macnamara sent the Barking right wing into action, and Foreman ran the ball through the defence, shooting at close range, but hitting the upright. Clements accepted a perfect centre from Hillman, but lifted the ball too high. Barlow held a long shot from Mahoney before Golders Green asserted themselves again. Walker and Stovell worked through and raised the hopes of the visiting supporters, but when Walker was left to finish off, he shot outside the posts. Caswell returned the ball from the goal-kick, and Walker engineered an opening for F. Boston, but he shot wildly. Several times the Golders Green forwards defeated themselves by crowding in the centre.
Toward the end Hillman had a grand effort cleared by Barlow, who also dived to the corner of the goal to save from Mahoney. Hillman added a spectacular touch to the closing minutes when, taking up the ball from Richardson, he streaked away, cut right through the Golders Green defence and passed in to Clements, who was well placed, but Barlow was ready for the shot, and the whistle went with no score in the second half.
