A breakaway seven minutes after half-time gave Golders Green the verdict over Tufnell Park in the F.A. Cup Preliminary Round on Saturday, and this was the only goal scored. It came from Lewin, off Johnny Hill's pass, and was a well-deserved goal, rewarding Golders Green for the strenuous time they had passed through in the first half.
There was one change in the Golders Green team, F. Boston being absent through illness. His place was taken on the left wing by F. Long, who played a good game in the Reserves on the previous Saturday and who quite justified his selection.
Graves was again the most prominent player for Golders Green, but Brown and Long combined well, and the wing halves, Ward and Davis, gave a good account of themselves, though Ward was inclined to wander too much over the field. W. Boston and Caswell were a solid rearguard most of the time, and Barlow's work in goal was of a high standard.
Not much was seen of Breagan, while Hill and Lewin appeared to be suffering from their " rough time " of the previous week. Lewin was too light in the centre against a heavy defence, though it was he who scored the winning goal.
Andrews, at left-half, was the outstanding player for Tufnell Park. Bowden, at inside-right, suffered from injury early in the second half, and there seemed to be a second-half failure on the part of Elgar, the centre-half.
The Tufnell Park forwards missed many opportunities, but the ball control and passing generally was better than that shown by Golders Green.
Tufnell Park won the toss and gave Golders Green the advantage of the wind during the first half. From the start the ball was played too high, and a lot of useless work resulted on both sides, but the home team looked more businesslike in their methods and would have scored an early lead but for the quality of the Golders Green defence. Golders Green made an early attack along the left wing, and from a throw-in Brown and Long reached close quarters, but Long lifted the ball too high and the wind carried it behind the net. From the goal-kick Andrews put a long pass out to Lack, who took a shot, but Boston cleared. Then Barlow came out to clear from the centre-forward while Caswell held Bowden off.
Golders Green forced an unproductive corner and, following some clever work by Long, the right wing were given an opening, but Breagan was too slow and had to pass back to Davis, who shot over the bar. Tufnell Park carried out raids on both wings before Golders Green came back to cause the home defence some anxiety. Lewin and Hill worked through and Hill found the net, but the whistle went for offside as he took the shot. Davis tried another long shot and missed.
Long was playing a quick but methodical game, with nice foot and head work, while Brown partnered him well, but Tufnell Park were playing a queer formation, with three and frequently four backs, and a close watch was kept on the Golders Green left wing, which was the only source of danger to the home goal.
Another corner led to a near shot by Davis. Once Graves took the ball well into home territory, but he was fouled, and the free-kick came to nothing.
At the other end danger came from a corner kick on the right, but Ward headed the ball away and, though Muffett secured at once and shot, Davis cleared it again.
Graves and Caswell defended well during a long spell of pressure by Tufnell Park, but the Greens' goal had a narrow escape when Tuthill, beating Graves, flashed towards an open goal. Barlow was out to meet him, but Tuthill got the ball past the goalkeeper and Boston slipped in to clear only just in time.
Man for man, Tufnell Park were quicker on the ball and were better able to find their men in passing the ball, but their shooting was not brilliant.
Shortly before the interval, Muffett beat three defenders, but over-ran the ball when a goal seemed certain.
Golders Green too often allowed themselves to be caught offside, and a lot of good work was defeated in this way. Davis, showing himself a schemer, followed up the forwards well, and twice helped Brown to a likely shot close on half-time, but R. Hill held the ball each time. From a pass by Brown, Johnny Hill turned in a fine low shot and R. Hill dropped the ball, but recovered at once and saved.
Generally speaking, Golders Green were woefully slow as compared with their display against Tooting and Mitcham the previous Saturday, and when the goal-less first half ended prospects looked very dim.
After the change-over, however, their game improved and, though Tufnell Park now had the wind behind them, the visiting defence never let them take full advantage of this.
Tufnell Park were now working hard to keep the visitors out, and after seven minutes LEWIN snapped up a perfect through-pass from Johnny Hill to score the all-important goal, giving the Park goalkeeper no chance with the shot.
Lack should have equalised, but he hit the upright with a stinging shot low down, and there was no forward at hand to deal with the ball from the rebound. Three Park forwards missed a glorious centre from Muffett, and Boston hooked the ball away cleverly when Tuthill put in an almost unstoppable shot.
Golders Green now did some more of the pressing, and Brown was prominent in many promising movements, but the weakness of Lewin and Hill had its effect all the time. Golders Green would have been well advised to bring Breagan inside, for he was wasted on the wing with no inside support. Once, however, Hill returned to his true form, tricked two defenders and passed out to Breagan, who made good ground and centred, dropping the ball right on top of the crossbar.
In the last five minutes Tufnell Park made great efforts to draw level, but the Golders Green defence stood firm.
