Playing Southall in the Athenian League at Southall on Wednesday night, Golders Green drew in a goal-less game.
Southall, playing a sound long-passing game, set up a brisk attack, while at the other end Golders Green were restricted by the offside game. Breagan, Owen and Ellison resorted to long shots, but had little hope of beating the goal-keeper with these. Yet Golders Green were the first to find the net, but the whistle blew for offside as Wright shot in from Evans, who had done some good close pay to secure the opening for the centre. Soon afterwards Owen put Wright in the way to shoot, but a corner resulted off the goal-keeper.
The Green's goal weathered a lot of danger and Barlow did well between the posts, but Golders Green had a lucky escape when the Southall centre-forward muffed it after Bucci had passed too short back to Barlow. Half-time: no score.
Barlow was injured early in the second half and had to leave the field, Fred Boston taking his place. Golders Green played up strongly for a time and Ellison, taking a centre from Breagan, shot into the goal-keeper's arms. Another of Ellison's shots brought the custodian to the ground, but he held the ball.
Barlow returned to goal before any damage was done. Southall had plenty of chances, but were poor finishers, and Clark (inside-right) even missed a point-blank shot following a free-kick. At the other end, however, Breagan missed a perfect shot after Ellison had provided the opening.
Towards the end Graves moved to centre-forward and at once he nearly scored, but the shot scraped outside the post. Lovell transferred to centre-half. Southall had another narrow escape when Evans struck the upright, but Southall went near when the outside-right broke away and finished with a clean shot which Barlow did well to stop.
Golders Green gave Southall a hot ten minutes at the close, but no score resulted.
