From the Hendon Times, 13/09/1940, p.3
Golders Green were without a competitive fixture on Saturday, but they went away for a friendly match with Tooting and Mitcham, taking a team very little changed from the previous week's.
At half-time Golders Green were losing by 4-0, and the score remained unchanged when the final whistle went.
The Football Association having refused sanction for the new names suggested by the League, the title has reverted to the Herts and Middlesex Combination, in which the Green will meet Slough at Claremont-road tomorrow.

The sounding of the sirens brought the game to a close when Golders Green lost to Tooting & Mitcham [United] by 4-0.
Golders Green's forwards were again goal-shy on Saturday, and once more the tendency to hold the ball too close on the part of the inside forwards, robbed them of chances. Pulling, the best attacker in the side, was very badly served on account of this, and the line never functioned.
Tooting were a faster and more purposeful side, and though Wright appeared to be well offside when he scored their first goal, the lead was deserved.
The ex-Golders Green player, Dave Walker, at centre-forward for the home side, gave Norris an excellent opening, from which that player notched the second goal.
The third goal was scored by Wright, the shot being deflected into the net by W. Boston.
Hawkins made a fine save from an effort by Cochrane, but just before the end, when the Green appeared to be asserting themselves more, Wright again got through.
