Golders Green lost to Leyton by 3 goals to 2 at Claremont Road, on Saturday, and as a result cannot finish higher than seventh place in the Final Table of the Herts and Middlesex League.
Two of the three chances necessary to give Golders Green fifth place in the Table came off when Finchley beat Slough and Walthamstow Avenue beat St. Albans. But the third match, the Green versus Leyton, upset the calculations.
There was a tricky wind which made accurate football difficult, and Leyton were perhaps a little bit stronger, but although the visiting defence was sound, the Green had many scoring chances.
But the Green made a fatal mistake; had Stroud been given more of the ball they might have won.
Munday was absent, injured, and F. Long deputised at left-half moderately well. Alexander did not have a happy day, with the result that Fisher and Rodwell were at times overworked.
Leyton took the lead after about 12 minutes' play when Ashmore scored from Candice's pass. Golders Green equalised almost immediately, Stroud beat Watson and centred across, and finally, after several shots, the ball went to Bucci, who scored with a good drive.
Leyton had several narrow escapes, Gibbs having difficulty in clearing, while at the other end Stidder made a brilliant dive, taking the ball from Ashmore's toe when he was right through.
Half-time came without further score, but immediately on resuming Leyton again took the lead. Ashmore put the ball to Stevenson who ran on and scored. Golders Green's chances of equalising looked remote when Goodchild was carried off the field with a leg injury. While he was off, however, following a throw-in, Pulling put in a great shot which completely beat Gibbs (Letyon, goal). Leyton, however, regained the lead soon afterwards, when Phillips eluded Rodwell and put the ball right across the field for Candice to net the winning goal.
