Match Report

Golders Green gave a first-rate performance at Claremont Road on Saturday when they held Tooting and Mitcham to a two-all draw. The result was a fair reflection of the play, which was even, well-contested, and of a high standard throughout.

Staged for the benefit of the Mayor of Hendon's Aid to China Fund, the game was watched throughout by the Mayor, Alderman R. A. B. Teare, M.B.E., J.P., who spoke on behalf of the fund at the interval. The ground collection realised £5 0s. 1d.

Goodchild was unfit, and his place was taken by E.M. Owen, one of the Green's pre-war players home on leave.

The feature oif the game was the fine display at centre-forward of F.(?) Yates, making his debut for the Green. He comes to the Club from Chesham United, and his speed, shooting, ball control and clever distribution stamped him as a valuable acquisition. It appears that in this player Golders Green have solved one of their major team problems.

Within five minutes of the start, Yates showed his mettle. Pulling put the ball forward to Owen, who passed to the centre-forward. Taking the ball in his stride, YATES outpaced the defenders and rammed home a glorious shot to give the Green the lead.

The lead weas held for 25 minutes against determined Tooting attacks. Then, from a long forward punt, PARKER took the ball on the volley ans scored while Stidder was shaping for the bounce.

Half-time came wit the score 1-1, but three minutes after resuming Tooting went ahead, when, following a corner, THOMPSON headed into the net. The Green worked hard for another goal : Hall saved a stinger from Evans, but the home side had a narrow escape when a free kick was awarded to Tooting. Stidder ran out and took the ball from Parker's toe.

A sight attack of cramp caused Yates to leave the field, but he soon came back and celebrated his return by notching the equalising goal, though credit for the opening must goal to Stroud, whose brilliant header gave centre-forward YATES his chance.

Yates had bad luck towards the end of the game when, with Hall beaten, a magnificent header hit the post and rebounded into play. Just on time, Tooting forced a corner, but after a breathless moment or two, the danger was averted.
