The pitch at White Hart Lane last Saturday was a quagmire and players on both sides wallowed in the mud. In the circumstances, the display given by both sides was creditable, with Golders Green just about deserving their win.
The visitors made several changes from the side that lost to Tufnell Park: Bossoms resumed at left back and played a big part in Golders Green's win. Roy Stroud came in at inside left and played one of his best games for the Club: he was forceful and speedy and distributed the ball well. Gallacher was absent because of injury sustained the previous week, and his place was taken by L. Salt, a promising Reserve.
The first half was goalless, and if anything Wood Green had more openings.
Golders Green took the lead after 10 minutes of the second half, when, following a throw-in, Stroud shot: Fair dashed in, but the ball was already in the goal: three minutes later, the score was 2-0, Stroud again netting with a great shot well out of Rose's reach.
Wood Green fought hard for a while and, succeeding in keeping the visitors at bay, went over to attack. After half an hour, they were rewarded with a penalty for hands, from which Martin scored to bring the tally [to] 2-1. Encouraged, the home side played well, Warren in paticular, giving Bossoms plenty of work. Then, after 35 minutes' play, Golders Green went down the fiield: Fair slippped the ball beautifully to Finch, who put the ball scross for Henocq to tap home with Rose at the other end of the goal.
Wood Green struggled gamely and gained two corners, which were of no avail, but less than five minutes from the end they reduced their arrears when Warren, their armless right winger, went through, beat four men beautifully while cutting in, and shot past Roberts to score a fine individual goal.
