Match Report

Hendon completed their preseason preparations with a comfortable victory over Welsh visitors Cardiff Corinthians. In their last three warm-up games, the Greens have scored 13 goals.

The Corries actually took the lead after four minutes, Grant Thompson's flicked header beat Will Davies and sent Kevin Crock clear. Luke Thornton came off his line, but he could do nothing about CROCK's lob which bounced just in front of the line.

Tempers became rather heated under the broiling sun and referee Marvin Thompson used his peace-making skills to keep everything under control. But Hendon's frustration became assuaged by a lovely equalising goal.

In the 19th minute, the Greens put together a fine move which was finished in magnificent fashion following a short pass from Ricardo Alves. The bending 25-yard strike from Mark NICHOLLS left Corries' only English player, goalkeeper Quinn McCarthy, helplessly beaten.

More good approach play saw Hendon take the lead after 36 minutes. Dave Hunt and Nicholls combined well and when the ball fell to Eugene OFORI, he needed no second bidding to curl an 18-yard shot just inside the right post.

Just before half-time, the lead was extended by a penalty kick. Nicholls burst into the penalty area and he was brought down by a careless challenge from Craig Sampson. NICHOLLS, who missed a spot-kick the previous weekend, made no mistake this time, beating McCarthy's dive.

Hendon made four changes at half-time, Dave Nolan, Wayne Carter, Nicholls and Hunt making way for Scott Williams, Richard McDonagh, Martin Vrhovski and Usif Bangura respectively. Later in the half Jazz Rose and Warren Clarke joined the fray in place of Ren Street and Alves. Only Mark and James Burgess, Davies and Ofori, of Hendon's outfield players were on the park for the full 90 minutes.

The second half was not as competitive as the first, the heat probably taking its toll on both sets of players. Corries didn't make their mass change until the drinks break after an hour. Even so, Hendon were comfortably on top and Thornton had only one save of note to make, a good low stop of a shot from Geraint Passmore.

The passing remained crisp from Hendon and Williams, attacking down the right flank, sent the ball into the path of Vrhovski, whose first-time shot in the 63rd minute cannoned off the post and bounced into the net.

With 17 minutes to go, Vrhovski completed a good afternoon's work by curling a free kick from 22 yards just inside the angle of post and crossbar.

"The heat was a major contributor this afternoon," admitted manager Tony Choules. "We had to work hard to get acclimatised for next week. But the good thing is that every member of the squad played well today."
