Hendon put in another good performance on Tuesday evening at Northwood, coming away with a 2-0 victory.
The game began in very wet conditions, with rain having fallen for much of the afternoon, including a heavy downpour shortly before the game. However the pitch had been well prepared and played very well, even if the ball did skid off the greasy surface at times.
Both sides started brightly, and after 10 minutes, Berkley Laurencin was forced into an excellent save, tipping the ball over the bar. At the other end, Danny Dyer forced the home keeper into a similar save.
Hendon took the lead in the 17th minute. Lubomir Guentchev slid the ball into the path of Glenn Garner. The big striker was forced to take the ball away from goal, but he managed to beat the keeper and curl the ball into the net. It was a fine goal, particularly as it looked like he had taken the ball too wide of the target.
Nine minutes later, the lead was doubled. Danny Dyer drove the ball across the box, and an attempted clearance by a Northwood defender hit one of his teammates and the ball flew into the net.
Hendon controlled the rest of the first half, and despite some excellent passing football, were unable to extend their lead.
The second half saw Northwood make a couple of changes, and this seemed to improve their performance. Their best chance came in the 64th minute when the referee spotted a handball by a Hendon defender in the 18 yard box. Scott Orphanou stepped up, but his effort was well saved by Laurencin, the only time the keeper was really tested in the second period.
Hendon's best chances fell to Garner, who saw his shot fly just over the bar, and Guentchev, whose header was directed straight at the keeper.
Gary McCann was more than satisfied after the game saying "That was a really good workout this evening, and we are looking forward to the season starting in ten days time."
