Hendon suffered another agonising defeat on Saturday afternoon, going down 2-1 at home to Ryman League Premier Division leaders and FA Cup heroes Yeading to a last minute goal.
With Dave Nolan and Danny Julienne suspended, Hendon further reshuffled the line-up with Gary Meakin dropping out. In came René Street, Mark Burgess and John Frendo, while Martin Vrhovski and Steve Brady were on the subs' bench.
In the second minute, King had to dive out of his goal to snare a driven cross from David Clarke which would otherwise have left Errol Telemaque with a fairly simple tap-in. Both teams looked to attack, but Yeading's raids carried significantly more menace.
However, without in-form striker DJ Campbell, serving a suspension, the Ding lacked an out-and-out goal threat. Hendon, meanwhile, struggled to get into position for putting efforts on target.
In the 23rd minute, the Hendon had a penalty shout turned down when Frendo managed to get around the back of the Yeading defence, a stride in front of Nevin Saroya. He had just about managed to control the ball when Saroya forced his way it at the same time as Frendo went to ground. From some angles it was a clear penalty, from others it was a simple contest between two players with the defender being stronger.
That was how the referee ruled it and Yeading were able to launch a quick counter-attack. It was a fine move and when Marvin Morgan crossed at pace, TELEMAQUE was on hand to drive home a fine first-time shot that gave King no chance.
For the rest of the first half, Hendon were hanging on as the giant Yeading team looked to make the game safe. The Greens defence did just enough to ensure they reached the safety of the dressing room with only a one-goal deficit.
The second half was a different story. Hendon came out with a different attitude and they completely dominated the possession. Frendo and Eugene Ofori had a couple of shots which Delroy Preddie saved with some ease, while Wayne Carter and Frendo were off-target with a couple of long-range drives. When a good opening came in the box, following a Dave Sargent corner, Hendon were unfortunately in that it fell to Danny Butler and the central defender was hurried into making a wayward cross.
Yeading still created the odd moment of danger at the Hendon end, but an indication of manager Johnson Hippolyte's concern was the fact that he introduced the more defensive Bobby Behzadi and Emond Protain for Michael Barima and former Green Leon Woodruffe, while Hendon removed Ross Pickett in favour Steve Brady to provide some width.
It took until the 78th minute for either goalkeeper to make a really notable save and it was Preddie who rescued Yeading with a superb block of a shot from Mark Nicholls. The former Chelsea man had also come close a few minutes earlier, but Preddie had done enough to force Nicholls wide of the six-yard box as he bore down on goal.
Hendon's deserved equaliser arrived in the 87th minute. A free-kick from Sargent was curled into the penalty area with some pace. It was too well struck for Preddie to have come off his line to deal with, but Behzadi failed to follow NICHOLLS' run and he couldn't really miss with his close-range header.
In the last minute of stoppage time, Dave King was caught by a nasty bounce as he was about to clear the ball. Telemaque gained possession and knocked into the path of Morgan, who rolled it into the almost unguarded net. It was questionable as to whether Mark Burgess was playing Morgan onside, but the goal was allowed by the match officials.
Hendon boss Gary Farrell said, "I am very proud of the way we battled back in the second half and we definitely deserved something from the game although it was a defensive error for the second goal."
