Hendon made it a perfect Easter when they twice came from a goal down to beat Wealdstone 3-2 at the White Lion Ground, Edgware, on Easter Monday afternoon. The victory - the Greens' most complete performance of Gary McCann's ten-match reign in charge - saw Hendon open up a four-point gap between them and the bottom half of the table and lifted them to within four points of seventh place.
Dean Coppard missed the game after picking up a knock on Saturday and he was replaced by Steve McGrath, who had recovered from flu. It was the only change to the starting line-up, while Gary Meakin's unavailability reduced the bench to four players.
In the opening 15 minutes, Hendon were on top, but couldn't turn their advantage into anything tangible. The 15 minutes that followed belonged to Wealdstone, but they too failed to make it count, although Dave King did make a good save from Jermaine Beckford. For the rest of the half it was pretty much even, during which time both teams scored.
Wealdstone took the lead with an excellent goal after 36 minutes when Hendon were caught out by a dangerous attack. Although McGrath did make one interception he could do no more than get his head to the ball and it fell to Richard Jolly, whose pass was driven into the bottom corner of the net off King's hands by BECKFORD.
Hendon's reponse was very rapid. A quick throw from Richard McDonagh found Eugene Ofori in space. He looked up, saw John Frendo in acres of space on the edge of the box and delivered a perfect pass. Although he could have shot first time, FRENDO instead took a touch and then drilled the ball of Andy Carter's hands into the net. And Frendo almost gave Hendon the lead just before the break when he shot on the turn, but directed the ball straight at the sprawling Carter.
At the start of the second half, Hendon nearly took the lead twice in a couple of minutes. Three minutes into the period, a fine turn and better curling shot beat Carter all ends up, but the ball flashed inches wide of the far post. Two minutes later, Carter produced an excellent save to deny Ofori.
The Stones started to come into the game. Rob Courtnage blocked a goalbound shot from Robin Tucker and an unmarked Beckford, at full stretch, couldn't direct Carl Martin's cross on target.
Then, in the 57th minute, Hendon found themselves trailing again. A corner from the Wealdstone right was delivered to beyond the far post. Dave Ryan backed into McGrath and when the defender stumbled he pulled down the Wealdstone man. The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot and Richard JOLLY rolled the ball into King's bottom right corner.
This was the signal for Hendon to start their fightback again, only this time it took 13 minutes for the equaliser to arrive. However, before that, Frendo curled a free-kick into the side netting with Andy Carter well beaten.
The equaliser was a little special in a Far Side sort of way. Richard McDonagh curled in a free kick which McGrath met with a powerful header. Carter dived but didn't get close to the ball as it crashed off the underside of the crossbar.
Ross Pickett met the rebound and his header also beat the recovering Carter, but also hit the underside of the bar. This rebound bounced to Ofori, who also beat Carter with a header, but the ball hit the underside of the bar for the third time. By this time Carter was lying on his back a yard and a half inside the goal, so when the ball bounced down and struck OFORI on the foot, the goalkeeper stopped the ball well after it had crept over the line.
As strange as the equaliser had been so the winner was a bit special. It came in the 79th minute and it was another dead-ball delivery from ex Stone McDonagh. Rene STREET rose high above his marker and sent a towering header into the roof of the net, with Carter's dive a vain gesture.
Two minutes later, Courtnage again made an important headed clearance, this time denying Joe Sparrowhawk, who had swopped with a diving header at the far post. It was the last clear opportunity for Wealdstone as Hendon comfortably played out the final dozen or so minutes.
Mr McCann said, "I am delighted with the win. Resilience and character come with time and that is what we showed this afternoon. At no time did I think we were going to lose the game, not even at 2-1 down."
