We jumped into second place in the league table after our fine 2-1 home win over Wycombe Wanderers. Now, with the same number of games played (23), we are only three points behind the champions Wimbledon.
The game was a sturdy affair, which really brought out the old phrase that football was a man's game. Wycombe gained a shock first half lead through centre-forward Peter Lowan, but a brilliantly taken penalty by Tony Knox, who has never missed from the spot for Hendon, squared the terms soon after the interval.
It was fitting that Gerry O'Rourke, fresh from his first amateur international triumph with Scotland, should net the winner a few minutes afterwards. We might have finished with a more convincing margin but for the excellent form of Wycombe's 24-year-old third team goalkeeper Colin Bunting. He pulled off some blinding saves.
