The long awaited FA Cup clash with Enfield ended in a 3-1 defeat after we had made such a splendid start at Southbury Stadium last Saturday.
Jimmy Quail gave us the lead after five minutes with a brilliantly headed goal but Enfield were on terms before the interval when John Swannell, blinded by the strong sun, was beaten by a long shot cum cross from right-half Alf D'Arcy.
What a barnstorming first half it was. The stadium fairly shook in one of the stormiest exhibitions of football seen for a long time. The referee certainly had his hands full and it was a wonder that nobody was sent off or even had their names taken.
Enfield were the stronger team in the second half and they beat us fair and square with another remarkable effort by D'Arcy followed by a flying header by their international centre-forward Tommy Lawrence.
This was truly a meeting of old friends and rivals, for no fewer than five Enfield players were once with Hendon and three of our lads had spells with Enfield.
