Another first round Amateur Cup exit? That was the question on most of our supporters' lips when the referee blow his whistle for half time against Sutton last Saturday.
At that stage we were a goal down and showing very little signs of our usual form. I felt that without more than our fair share of luck, we could very easily have been three goals down.
Coach Ron Burgess must have said some harsh words to our lads during the interval, because they came out and started to play with much more fight and purpose.
Danny Lakey, who was having a very good game on the left wing, received from Arthur Peel in the 48th minute. Danny beat Derek Gamblin, took it to the goal line and crossed for Peter Slade to head in the equaliser.
This seemed just the tonic we needed and it brought our 500 supporters behind the goal to life. The game continued to go from end to end, with some near misses by both sides.
Then, just when it looked like it must be a replay, David Hyde received the ball from Jimmy Quail, beat two defenders and let fly. The 'keeper saved but could only watch while it ran on to the post and in for what was to prove the winner.
