This 2nd round Amateur Cup game had all the ingredients for a first class game and in spite of the heavy conditions I feel it lived up to its promise.
The weather during the week did not help our groundsman Bill Scott and his team very much, but he spent a tremendous amount of time on it and great credit to him that the referee declared it fit for play.
Our boys took the field looking really fit and all keyed up and it was not long before they were proving it to us. The first ten minutes saw many anxious moments for the Leytonstone defence and they were a little fortunate not to have been a goal or two down. It was Danny Lakey who set the game alight with a shot from 15 yards which the keeper had no chance of saving.
Peter Slade gave us the second and I consider the best goal of the game when he pulled down a high ball, pushed it sideways, turned and hit a superb shot into the corner. This gave us a 2-0 advantage at half time and shortly after the resumption it was 3-0 when David Hyde scored his 40th goal of the season.
Peter Slade was in the picture when he engineered the fourth and fifth goals which Jimmy Quail took brilliantly. Brian Harvey got Leytonstone's consolation goal just before the end but by then the game was over.
