Wonderful! Wonderful! That was the unanimous feeling after our semi-final win against Finchley at Highbury last Saturday. We return to Wembley just five years after winning against Kingstonian in 1960. If this final is anything like the previous one then we have indeed got something to look forward to.
The semi-final battle of nerves really started during the previous week, with the Press giving both sides plenty of publicity, some of which we would sooner not have had. When both teams took the field the tension could be felt. Our lads - although you could sense they were keyed up - were the first to settle down and it was soon apparent that our normal football would see us through.
It was the Hyde-Quail "Knock-Out Drop" that set us on the winning path. The old trick that has worked so many times this season worked again, Jimmy touched a free kick sideways for David to hit a tremendous shot into the roof of he net. That gave us a 1-0 interval lead which could have been more if our forwards had steadied themselves in front of goal.
Shortly after the resumption a Roy Drake cross brushed Dave Emson's legs and was defelcted into the far corner for number two. David Hyde was again on target from six yards, and Peter Slade got the fourth to put the issue beyond doubt. Jim Cooley got Finchley's goal after a Turley shot had been pushed out by John Swannell.
