The final result of this match was rather flattering to our boys for the visitors played the second half with only 10 men, having lost centre half Bullman, who was injured early in the game after a hard tackle on Hyde.
This injury appeared to affect our play more than it did Ilford's for we seemed to go at half place whereas the Essex team went in with greater vigour. Certainly left back Halliday gave Laurie Churchill a rough passage, some of his tackles being on the dangerous side.
The visitors took the lead in the 14th minute when Micky Stewart turned the ball into his own goal. This inspired Ilford and a shot from right winger Hudson hit the upright with John Swannell well beaten.
Gradually we began to get control of the game with Dave Hyde wandering to both wings with good results. Our equaliser came in the 30th minute from Jimmy Quail after good work by Mills and Churchill, and goals number two and three followed from Danny Lakey and Mills to give us a 3-1 half time lead.
Ilford's ten men continued to force the pace in the second period and reduced the arrears after five minutes through left back Halliday.
But we came again with a typical Danny Kaley right foot flash that left everyone standing, and three fine goals from Laurie Churchill completed our scoring.
