Hendon continued their good league form with a 1-1 draw at Bromley. The Kent side have been one of the teams challenging for the title throughout the season, and so the point gained by the Greens is an excellent one.
Hendon made four changes from the side that started against Hayes on Wednesday evening, with Chris Robinson, Belal Aiteouakrim, Marc Leach and Davis Haule returning to the starting line up to replace Craig Vargas, James Burgess, Jazz Rose and Ross Pickett. The latter trio joined Darragh Duffy on the substitutes bench.
The Greens opened brightly and won the first corner of the game in the 4th minute, but the kick from Lee O'Leary was easily cleared by the Bromley defence. Hendon continued to put pressure on the home side but in the 10th minute Bromley broke away but saw a shot rebound off a Hendon defender and cleared to safety.
In the 23rd minute Jamie Busby fired in a 30 yard shot that fizzed just over the bar and three minutes later Wayne O'Sullivan and Aiteouakrim broke through the defence but a fine tackle saw the ball safe for Bromley.
A minute later there was controversy as the Greens had a goal disallowed. A shot was parried by Andy Walker in the Bromley goal and Aiteouakrim, who appeared to be in an onside position when the original shot was struck, slid the loose ball into the net. However, much to the disappointment of the Greens the assistant referee ruled that Aiteouakrim was offside.
Bromley then began to take more control of the game, but with O'Leary dominant in midfield, and the Hendon defence of Leach, James Parker, O'Sullivan and Robinson holding firm, the home side were finding it difficult to make any breakthrough.
In the 41st minute Dean Green created space for himself but was unable to keep his shot on target. Likewise, a minute before the break, Sam Wood fired a Bromley free-kick high and wide of the goal, and so at the break the scoreline was goalless.
Bromley came out in the second half with all guns blazing but it was Green who had the first shot at goal and his strike was well tipped over the bar by Walker. However, from the ensuing corner Bromley were able to clear the ball and a Hendon player caught a home player in midfield. The free-kick sent Nic McDonnell clear and as Richard Wilmot came out to narrow the angle, McDonnell slid the ball past him and into the net to open the scoring in the 48th minute.
For much of the second half, Hendon were kept penned back in their own half as Bromley really took control of the game and had the lion's share of possession. The Greens struggled to make any advances into the Bromley half, but, as in the first half, defence as in the first half worked really hard to keep the home side out. Richard Wilmot was forced into an excellent save in the 74th minute.
Hendon's equaliser came in the 84th minute when Leach delivered a beautiful cross into the area, and Duffy, who had replaced Green in the 70th minute, was in the right place to stroke the ball into the net to score his first goal for the club.
The Greens then had to hold tight for the last few minutes to earn the point and extend the unbeaten league run to four games. Mention must be made of James Parker who was outstanding in defence, particularly in the second half but credit must go to the whole team for a hard earnt and well deserved point.
"We played really well and deserved the result," said manager Gary McCann. "We were more than a match for one of the division's fancied teams. It shows just how far we have come."
"We have taken four points out of six from games against two of the top three teams in the division within a week and that can't be bad. If you had offered that to me a couple of weeks ago, I would have ripped off your arm for it."
