Hendon returned to winning ways on a hot sunny afternoon at Honeycroft as they beat Uxbridge 4-1 in their penultimate pre-season friendly.
With a few players unavailable for various reasons, Gary McCann named 16 players for the game. In the Uxbridge line-up was Wayne Carter, who played for the Greens in the first half of the 2004-05 season.
The performance from Hendon was far superior to that on Tuesday at Wingate & Finchley, and their first chance came in the 3rd minute when James Bent couldn't quite get enough power on his shot to test Charlie Miller in the Uxbridge goal.
A few minutes later Harry Hunt had a snapshot well saved, and almost immediately afterwards Jamie Busby fired a free-kick against the underside of the crossbar, but the ball bounced away to safety.
The opening goal came in the 22nd minute when a corner from Wayne O'Sullivan wasn't cleared and Mark Kirby pounced to slam the ball into the net.
Just six minutes later the lead was doubled when Hunt was sent clear by Brian Haule and he finished clinically. Uxbridge nearly scored shortly afterwards, but Dave Diedhiou, who has had an outstanding pre-season, was on hand to clear the ball off the line.
Uxbridge looked to bounce back in the second half, and their first chance of the period fell to Tommy Howe who saw his drive tipped wide of the goal by the very solid James Reading. However, ten minutes later the home side took advantage of some sloppy defending when Dave Warner headed home from a free kick.
The two goal advantage was restored in the 68th minute when Reading took a kick out of his hands and delivered it perfectly into the path of Hunt just as he beat the offside trap. Hunt took the ball around the keeper and scored. It was a fine example of a route one goal that any Wimbledon side of old would have been proud of.
The final goal of the game came three minutes from time. Glenn Garner broke into the box, but keeper Matt Burton just beat him to the ball and pushed it out for a corner. Garner tripped over Burton's arm and Much to the keeper's astonishment, the referee awarded a penalty. The Hendon fans behind the goal were unanimous that it was never a penalty. However, Busby stepped up and converted the spot kick with ease.
"That was much better than Tuesday night" said a very happy Mr McCann. "We have 18-20 players all competing for the 11 shirts in the starting line-up at Bognor and we are looking good for the season ahead."
