Saturday 17 August - Game of two halves

Hendon maintained their unbeaten start to the season after a game of two halves at SJP this afternoon.

After having the best of the first half and missing a host of chances, they went in at the break with only Matty Harriott's 32nd minute goal to show for their dominance.

Wimborne came back strongly to dominate after the break and deservedly drew level when Howard Hall was penalised for handball in the penalty area and Kieran Roberts tucked the penalty away to ensure a share of the spoils.

Next up for the Greens is a trip to Gosport Borough next Saturday.

Friday 16 August - Look ahead to Wimborne

Tomorrow afternoon we play host to Wimborne Town in our first Saturday home league match of the season.

Under the canny stewardship of former West Ham, Blackburn and Charlton midifielder Matty Holmes, Wimborne enjoyed a solid first ever season at step 3 last year finishing 14th level on points with ourselves but with a superior goal difference.

The two fixtures between the two sides saw goals galore with the Greens triumphing 3-2 at SJP thanks to a couple of Ricky German strikes allied with a beauty from Shaquille Hippolyte-Patrick, whilst at Cuthbury in February a brave Darren Locke header salvaged a vital point in the second half to share the honours in a six-goal thriller.

There have been plenty of changes in the summer, notably with prolific marksman Tobias Holmes - who scored 132 goals in 143 games for the Magpies - has departed along with goalkeeper Gerard Benfield to Salisbury, whilst incoming players include Tony Lee from Gosport Borough who was instrumental in both of the Hampshire side's victories over us last season.

So far this term Wimborne have taken a single point from their two opening games but been unable to find the net. They'll be looking to break that duck tomorrow whilst Jimmy Gray will hope that his charges can maintain their solid start to the campaign and add an all important win to their two impressive draws thus far.

Tuesday 13 August - Arthur arrests Greens Progress

The Greens maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 1-1 draw against Met Police this evening.

In a keenly contested game, Connor Calcutt opened the scoring ten minutes before time with a header from a Kam English cross but for the second time in three days a late goal denied the Greens as Jeremy Arthur stooped to head home Ollie Knight's cross 2 minutes from time.

Attention now moves to Saturday when we host Wimborne Town with a 3pm kick-off.

Monday 12 August - Mental Health Free Ticket Offer Remains Open

Ahead of our opening home league match against Metropolitan Police we would like to offer a reminder that our offer of free entry to any home league match for anyone struggling with depression, loneliness, isolation or any other mental health condition remains in place for this season and beyond.

The offer is designed to give someone whose day to day struggles threaten to overwhelm them a distraction for a couple of hours through football, hopefully providing some respite from the ongoing and constant mental anguish they're experiencing and provide a warm welcome and safe environment for them to visit at a time when leaving the house and being in the company of others can often feel like an insurmountable obstacle.

Anyone wishing to come along to a home league game is invited to drop chairman Simon Lawrence an email at simon.hendon@btinternet.com and he will arrange entry.

Monday 12 August - Former Player Update

With Jimmy Gray having completed his squad for the new season last week, a number of players who finished last season with the Greens have moved onto pastures new.

Bayley Brown and Andrew McCorkell both started in Beaconsfield Town's 1-0 defeat at Dorchester Town on Saturday whilst Shaquille Hippolyte-Patrick has signed for Salisbury and had a penalty saved in their 2-0 defeat at Chesham United at the weekend.

Lewis Toomey and Darren Locke both played against us for Berkhamsted last week in our final friendly and JJ da Cruz has signed for Isthmian League side Heybridge Swifts.

James Hammond played for Wingate & Finchley against us in pre-season as well, however he wasn't part of their squad for their opener at Bowers and Pitsea whilst Junior Osborne's whereabouts are currently unknown.

Monday 12 August - Met Police Preview

Tomorrow evening sees us kick off our home campaign with the visit of Metropolitan Police.

The Met are coming off the back of the finest season in their history and one which, in any other year, would have seen them gain promotion to the National League South.

After finishing last season in third place, they beat Salisbury in the play-off semi-final before despatching Poole Town in the final to take them into the Step 3 South Super Final against Isthmian League side Tonbridge Angels. It proved a step too far for the Blues, as they went down 3-2 at Imber Court.

In addition to their near success in the league, which included a double over the Greens (3-1 at home and 3-0 at Imber Court), they hosted Newport County in the first round of the FA Cup, going down 2-0 to the Exiles, and won the Surrey Senior Cup with a 2-0 win over Tooting & Mitcham United.

In spite of losing some crucial players (Ethan Chislett has joined Aldershot Town and striker Max Blackmore has re-signed for Westfield), boss Gavin MacPherson has kept the nucleus of last season's side together including, crucially, Jack Mazzone who will be well known to Greens fans for his spell with us towards the beginning of the decade. One or two additions have also been made including Bilal Sayoud, who made a couple of substitute appearances for us last season, following his release by Enfield Town.

Their season didn't begin as they might have liked, however, as they went down 2-0 at Imber Court against the other newly relegated side from the National League South, Truro City. They will be keen to get their season up and running at the second time of asking whilst Jimmy Gray will be looking to build on the encouraging display at Weston-super-Mare on Saturday afternoon.

Saturday 10 August - Greens denied at the death

Hendon very nearly came away from their opener at Weston-,super-,Mare with all three points but were denied by an equaliser four minutes into stoppage time.

Luke Tingey gave the Greens a dream start after 6 minutes with a near post header before Kameron English extended the lead thirteen minutes later capitalising on a goalkeeping error.

Nick McCootie reduced the arrears five minutes before the break and Hendon had to withstand heavy pressure throughout the second half, digging in. With a minute of stoppage time remaining the hosts' perseverance paid off and Ben Whitehead kept his head to slot past Chris Grace to salvage a point

Friday 09 August - Weston-super-Mare Preview

Tomorrow we finally begin the new league season with a first ever visit to Weston-super-Mare.

The seagulls have returned to the Southern League after relegation last season from the National League South of whom they were one of the founder members.

Their pre-season campaign has seen them take on a number of local professional clubs and includes an 8-1 defeat against a full-strength League 1 Newport County side, however it also includes an excellent 2-1 triumph over Taunton Town in the Somerset Premier Cup Final.

After a difficult 2018/9 season, the club under the stewardship of Scott Barlett, will be looking to bounce back at the first time of asking and are one of the fancied sides in the league this season. With the weather forecast threatening unseasonally high winds, a tough and keenly fought encounter looks to be on the menu for both sides as they look to make a positive start to the new campaign.

Thursday 08 August - Two more join

Ahead of the big weekend kick-off, Jimmy Gray has added two further faces to his squad.

Goalkeeper Max Huxter has signed from Bromley, where he was last season. Max, who is 24, was in goal for our friendly on Tuesday night at Berkhamsted.

Also joining is Tahjae Anderson, a 19 year old striker who was also with Bromley last season and also had a spell at Herne Bay. Tahjae had spent pre-season with Ebbsfleet United and was offered a deal, but turned it down in search of more regular playing time.

We welcome both Max and Tahjae to the club and wish them well for their time at SJP.

Wednesday 07 August - Valentine's Stay Confirmed

Hot on the heels of his early second half strike last night at Berkhamsted, forward Luca Valentine has signed for the new season.

Luca has been a fixture for the Greens during pre-season scoring breaking Edgware's hearts with a double in the early training game and was with Staines Town last term.

We welcome him to SJP and wish him a successful time with the club.

Wednesday 07 August - Greens finish with a win

Hendon finished their pre-season build-up with a 3-2 win at Berkhamsted last night.

Kameron English opened the scoring in the 33rd minute with a well taken left-footed finish before Dan Williams converted Connor Calcutt's adroit far post knock back on the stroke of half time.

A trialist extended the lead 29 seconds in the second period as the Greens briefly threatened to run riot, however the hosts took advantage of two Hendon defensive errors to reduce the arrears and were indebted to two fine saves from a trialist goalkeeper to secure the win.

Focus now switches to the beginning of the league campaign and the opening fixture on Saturday at Weston-super-Mare.

Saturday 03 August - Greens go Goalless

Hendon's latest pre-season warm-up saw them draw 0-0 in a keenly contested friendly with Southern League Central Premier Division side St Ives Town this afternoon.

In a game of few clear-cut chances, both goalkeepers were forced into one excellent save each with Chris Grace making a solid stop early on and the home custodian denying a trialist about twenty minutes from time.

The final warm-up sees us travel to Berkhamsted on Tuesday night. Kick-off is at 7:45pm.

Friday 02 August - Newman and a New man sign

Two more players put pen to paper at training last night to further reinforce James Gray's squad ahead of the new season.

Matty Newman has overcome the injury problems that limited his impact last season and re-signed whilst Arash Abdollahi has also signed forms. He was part of our successful Under-23 squad last season.
