Monday 24 June - Meet Our New Opponents: Weston-super-Mare

The second team to have been relegated to the Southern League South Premier Division last season from the National League South is Weston-super-Mare.

There was originally a football club named Weston-Super-Mare formed as early as 1887 but which was disbanded prior to World War I before undergoing a reformation and second closure between the two world wars. They were reformed for a second time in 1948 and immediately joined the Western League, Division 2.

In 1960 the Western League consolidated into a single division and there they remained until 1976 when they were placed into the Premier Division when a second tier was re-established. By the time of the centenery of the formation of the original club in 1887 they were in the unusual position of never having gained promotion or relegation in their history.

In 1992 they gained promotion for the first time into the Southern League's second tier where they remained until 2002/3 when they gained promotion to the Premier Division. A 10th placed finish at the first time of asking ensured Weston's place in the inaugural Conference South for the 2004/5 season which would see them move into their new Woodspring Stadium ground.

Over their fifteen seasons at Step 2 the club preserved their proud record of never having been relegated, part in thanks to three separate reprieves from the drop until last season, when the Seagulls finished bottom of the pile, seven points from safety.

Thursday 20 June - Meet Our New Opponents: Truro City

This season sees the club due to make their longest ever away trip for a league match as they travel to Cornwall to take on newly relegated Truro City.

Formed in 1889 as one of the founding members of the Cornish County Football Association, they beat Penzance 7-1 in their first ever fixture before winning the Cornish Senior Cup six years later, triumphing over Launceston 5-0.

After many years at junior and district level, the White Tigers were founder members of the South Western League in 1951, a competition they won on five occasions before gaining promotion into the Western League Division 1 in 2006.

They won the title at the first time of asking as well as the FA Vase, overcoming AFC Totton 3-1 at Wembley in front of a record gate for an FA Vase Final in May 2007. 12-months later and they had won the Western League Premier Division to move up into the Southern League.

Five promotions in six seasons saw the club promoted into the Conference South in 2011 before being relegated two years later after being placed into administration. At the end of the 2014/5 season they once again gained promotion to step 2, a position they held until the end of last season when off-field problems took their toll, including a number of home matches being hosted at Torquay United's Plainmoor, more than 80 miles away from Truro.

Wednesday 19 June - Seven Youngsters Join Johnson

It was announced earlier in the week that seven of last season's successful Under-23 side have joined Finlay Johnson at Chalfont St Peter where they will be in contention for first-team football at Step 4.

Daniel Purdue, Jordan Payne, Ben Gray, Alfred Acheampong, Khalil Francis, Riccardo Alexander-Greenaway and Perry Aitchison have all moved to Mill Meadow.

Purdue wrote himself into Hendon folklore in November 2017 when he stepped in at short notice to deputise for Tom Lovelock and produced a match-winning performance in the FA Trophy penalty shoot-out win at Slough Town. He went on to make a further five appearances for the first-team.

Alexander-Greenaway signed first-team forms in the 2017-8 season as well without making an appearance, however he did make the breakthrough into Jimmy Gray's squad on a number of occasions last term, making 9 first team appearances.

Gray and Payne both made their first-team debuts at Harrow Borough in last season's London Senior cup with Gray also appearing from the substitutes bench in the League Cup tie at Met Police whilst the other three did not appear for the first-team.

We wish all of the boys every success in the next step of their footballing adventure and will be watching their progress with interest as well as thanking them for their service with the Greens last season.

Monday 17 June - Meet Our New Opponents. Hayes & Yeading United

Hayes & Yeading United are the second new opponents taking their place in the Southern League South Premier Division next season, being moved across after handsomely winning the Bostik League South Central Division by 16 points, scoring 129 league goals in the process.

The club was formed in 2007 as an amalgamation of Hayes and Yeading Football Clubs, both of whom were members of the Conference South.

In 2008/9 they secured their place in the Conference National after overcoming Hampton and Richmond Borough in the Play-Off Final. Their stay in the top flight lasted three seasons, relegation coming at the end of the 2011/2 season, which was also their first season ground sharing at Woking's Kingsfield stadium after the closure of Hayes' old Church Road ground.

Following many years of struggle both on and off the pitch as they tried to secure their new home on the site of Yeading's old ground, including a reprieve from relegation, the club found itself relegated to the Southern Leauge at the end of the 2015/6 season and the following season found themselves relegated to Step 4.

Stability has been found under the stewardship of Paul Hughes and their move into the Sky-Ex Stadium culminating in last season's title success and, of course, a 2-0 win here at SJP knocking us out of the Middlesex Senior Cup courtesy of Duncan Culley's brace.

Friday 14 June - Meet Our New Opponents. Blackfield and Langley

Following last season's guide to sides in the Southern League, Greensnet has compiled a guide to our new opponents who we will meet in the coming season beginning with Blackfield and Langley.

Formed in 1935 the club spent its formative years competing in junior leagues around Southampton before moving into the Hampshire League in 1949.

After spending many years in Divisions 3 and 4 at county league level the club gained promotion to Division 2 in 1981/2 and three years later into the top flight after winning the title. In 1997/8 they won the Division 1 championship and the Southampton Senior Cup however were denied promotion due to ground grading issues, however these were rectified and by the turn of the century had gained promotion into the Wessex League.

After finishing as runners-up in Division 1 of the Wessex League in 2007/8, they won the Premier Division in 2012/3 however chose not to accept promotion into the Southern League due to costs associated with improving the ground. They won the title again in 2017/8 and then last season made it two titles on the trot by winning the Southern League Division 1 South title to gain promotion to step 3 for the first time.

Thursday 13 June - Roberts' ride raises £330 for 12th Man

Bryan Roberts successfully completed his overnight London bike ride last weekend raising a superb 1,170 pounds for Save the Children.

Bryan said "The ride of 81 miles was completed between 22.45 on Saturday night and 06.45 Sunday morning. As part of the broader fundraising for Save the Children, which raised £1,170, you lovely lot pledged £330, which means that same amount has now been passed to the 12th Man Fund to support the club over the forthcoming season.

"Thanks for your support & see you all soon."

Our congratulations to Bryan on completing the latest of a series of tough charity trials and we'd like to add our thanks to everyone that sponsored and supported him, Save the Children and the club.

Thursday 13 June - Locke moves on

It has been announced on Twitter that centre-half Darren Locke has left the club and agreed to join Berkhamsted.

Signed from Chesham United in December 2018, Darren battled a number of injuries to make 9 appearances for the club, scoring once at Wimborne where his brave header clinched a crucial point on the road.

We'd like to thank Darren for his efforts over the past six months, wish him well for the future and will no doubt see him in pre-season when we visit the Broadwater stadium.

Wednesday 12 June - Chitty runs for Twelfth Man

Our most original 12th Man Fund pledge to date comes from our new supporter, Lynne Chitty.

Lynne, who is based in Devon and attended our game at Tiverton last season, was attracted to the club by the Mental Health work that we undertake along with Silver Jubilee Park.

Lynne's pledge is to run 1936.7 miles betweeen now and the end of the 2019/20 season and to donate 10p for every mile that she runs to the 12th Man Fund.

If Lynne manages to achieve her running target, that will bring us nearly 200 pounds closer to the 12th Man Fun target of 16,000 pounds.

Lynne told the website "That is the distance the team will have to travel to away games! Once the fixtures are out, I will select a couple of games to run to and will sponsor myself 10p a mile.

"If you would like to run with me to a match my email is COYG!"

If you don't fancy running but would like to sponsor Lynne and support Jimmy Gray and the lads in the process, please click here to donate to the 12th Man Fund.

Jimmy Gray has made a third new addition to his squad ahead of the new season with the signing of James Harper.

This is James' second spell with the club having originally played a huge role in our escape from relegation in 2016/7 providing a steadying influence in midfield. Last season James was with Gosport Borough, although he did not appear in either game against us.

We welcome James back to SJP and wish him a successful stay.
