Tuesday 31 December - Team of the Decade revealed - Strikers

Finally, we take a look at the two men to take the striking berths in your team of the decade.

Firstly Kezie Ibe makes the cut. Signed in the summer of 2014 after a spell at Basingstoke Town, the vastly experienced front-man forged a highly successful partnership in the first half of the 2014/5 season with Leon Smith and the second half of the campaign with Aaron Morgan. Kezie ended the season as top scorer with 28 goals, the most memorable of which was probably his strike against Kingstonian at Earlsmead where a shuffle and drop of his shoulder sent two Ks defenders off towards Northolt Park, before he turned and curled a left footed shot beyond Rob Tolfrey. In the two seasons that followed, Kezie was one of the few constants, often ploughing a lone and frustrated furrow up front but always putting the team before himself. HIs hold up play was second to none and although the goals dried up, his ability to bring team-mates into play didn't. He left the club in the middle of the 2017/8 season, seeking regular football, and has since been with Harlow Town, Egham United and Enfield Town.

It's no surprise that Kezie's partner is Niko Muir. Originally signed in 2012/3, Niko left without making an appearance and spent many years banging in the goals at Northwood. Niko did have the occasional spell elsewhere, but it wasn't until the start of the 2016/7 season when he joined us at SJP that he truly felt at home at Step 3. After a slow start, Niko went on to score 11 goals before joining Leiston midway through the campaign where he partnered the league's top scorer, Matt Blake.

Finding the travelling too much, Niko rejoined the Greens in the summer of 2017 and quickly hit his straps. His hat-trick against Burgess Hill Town in February 2018 was is 4th of a campaign which saw him become only the second Hendon player to score 40 goals in a season in the semi-professional era. A midwinter trial at QPR came to nothing and he eventually made the move north to Hartlepool United in the summer of 2018. He is currently midway through a loan spell with Hemel Hempstead Town.

The full 11 is:

1. Tom Lovelock

2. Chris Seeby

3. Ollie Sprague

4. Casey Maclaren

5. Elliott Brathwaite

6. Charlie Goode

7. Josh Walker

8. Dave Diedhiou

9. Niko Muir

10. Kezie Ibe

11. Ashley Nathaniel-George

The second string XI isn't bad either:

1. Berkley Laurencin

2. Jake Eggleton

3. Scott Cousins

4. Kevin Maclaren

5. Luke Tingey

6. Arthur Lee

7. Shaquille Hippolyte-Patrick

8. Jamie Busby

9. Leon Smith

10. Belal Aite-ouakrim

11. Darren Currie

Tuesday 31 December - Team of the Decade revealed - midfield

The midfield has an intriguing mix of flair, bite, industry and skill with more than 700 appearances in the middle and two elusive goalscoring wingers out wide.

First up in the centre of midfield is Casey Maclaren. Originally signed in the summer of 2007, Casey is one of two members of the side that recall Claremont Road, and who spent more than a decade at the club. Able to play in midfield, at full-back or even at times as a centre-forward and emergency goalkeeper, Casey epitomised everything about Gary McCann's time at Hendon during the nomadic years and beyond. A regular goalscorer and, at times, a scorer of great goals (rockets against Tonbridge and Harrow attest to this), Casey also scored one of the most crucial goals of recent years with his equaliser against Staines Town to secure our survival in April 2017.

Partnering Casey is another Mr Dependable, and another to have played in almost every position, Dave Diedhiou. Dave signed for the club in the summer of 2008 from Willesden Constantine and swiftly became a fan's favourite for his big-hearted displays. Scorer of the last Hendon goal at Claremont Road, Dave was another regular goalscorer from midfield. As time went on, so did Dave's ability to put his stamp on a game and often filled in at full-back or centre-half as well as occasionally wide in midfield. After leaving to try his luck at St Albans City, Dave has returned to make a couple of appearances this term for the Greens on dual registration, much to the delight of the supporters.

The two wingers were part of the awesome foursome that took us so close to promotion in 2017/8 and swiftly went on to excel in the professional game.

Ashley Nathaniel-George signed in the summer of 2017 from Potters Bar Town and took a little while to settle down at SJP before a terrific performance and couple of brilliant goals in a 4-3 defeat at Billericay Town saw potential turn into something more tangible. Bewitching levels of skill and a turn of pace saw defenders unable to cope with Ash and often, they were forced to resort to unfair means to stop him. His 17th and final goal for the club came in the play-off final defeat against Dulwich Hamlet and the summer of 2018 saw him depart for Crawley Town in League 2.

Josh Walker takes the other winger's berth having marked his debut with a brilliant goal from the bench to win the game at Champion Hill in September 2017 against Dulwich Hamlet. Josh was another with skill and pace to burn and was often used to good effect to come off the bench and score when defences were tiring. His best performance arguably came against Billericay in the 4-1 win at SJP where an expensively assembled back four couldn't get near him - or Niko Muir - as the two of them put Glenn Tamplin's side to the sword. In the summer of 2018 Josh moved up the Jubilee Line to Barnet, and after missing large portions of last season through injury, he is now thriving under the stewardship of a man he beat into third place in this vote, Darren Currie.

Tuesday 31 December - Team of the Decade revealed - Goalkeeper and Defenders

Over the past week or so fans have been busily voting for their team of the decade which we have pleasure in being able to reveal today.

In goal is Tom Lovelock, who played a huge role in our survival in 2016/7 and then our play-off season the following year with a series of key saves. Rarely making an error that led to a goal, Tom's performance at Dulwich in September 2017 will live long in the memory.

Chris Seeby and Ollie Sprague take the full-back berths. Chris was an attacking right-back with an eye for goal and joined the club in the summer of 2013. A serious knee injury kept him out for a year towards the end of 2014/5 and he scored from just inside his own half on his return against Billericay. Sadly, a further knee injury in the autumn of 2016 saw Chris retire from the game.

Ollie, meanwhile, joined the club in April 2014 and went on to make the left-back berth his own the following season, allowing Scott Cousins to concentrate on coaching. He quickly had league scouts watching him and was once called up as standby for England C before brief spells at Welling and Billiercay interrupted his Hendon career. Now at St Albans with Lee Allinson's Dad, Ian.

The centre back partnership is that which went so close to promotion in 2014/5, Elliott Brathwaite and Charlie Goode. Elliott originally joined the club in the summer of 2011 and sustained a serious knee injury on his debut that kept him out for more than a year. He made his first return in 2013 but again sustained another serious injury which kept him out until the end of the 2013/4 season. 2014/5 was the one injury free season Elliott was able to enjoy and when Charlie joined the club in the autumn of 2014, the two forged a terrific partnership at the heart of defence.

Unfortunately Elliott sustained further injuries on the first day of the 2015/6 season and then in late 2016 during his comeback - which finally saw him have to retire from the game.

Charlie was only with the club for six months during 2014/5 after he signed from AFC Hayes but it soon became apparent that Gary McCann had a gem on his hands. Good with the ball on the deck, unbeatable in the air and with an awareness rarely seen for a 19-year old, Charlie had league scouts watching him from early on. He picked up England C recognition in the summer of 2015 (only the second Hendon player to do so) before joining Scunthorpe United shortly afterwards. Charlie is now the skipper at League 2 side Northampton Town.

Saturday 21 December - Ed's up for the point

Hendon overcame a poor second half performance to salvage a point this afternoon against Hartley Wintney at an increasingly chilly Silver Jubilee Park, and moved out of the bottom three on goal difference in the process.

Kingsley Eshun opened the scoring in the first minute starting and finishing a sweeping move that involved Liam Brooks and the Greens went on to have the best of the opening 45 minutes and Tommy Smith had a goal contentiously ruled out on the stroke of half-time.

A change of shape saw Hartley dominate the second period, without ever really testing Rihards Matrevics until a speculative cross from Tom Bird floated over the goalkeeper and just inside the far post on 65 minutes, 2 minutes later a calamitous defensive error saw Joshua Webb fire home from fully 30 yards to give the visitors the lead.

After Andronicus Georgiou had Hendon's first shot on target in the second half in the 87th minute, the resulting corner fell to Eddie Oshodi who swept the ball home for his first Hendon goal.

Six minutes of end-to-end stoppage time failed to produce a winner and both sides ended up settling for a point apiece.

Saturday 07 December - Greens survive attempted Merthyr

A battling Hendon gained three crucial points this afternoon at Silver Jubilee Park against a strong and competitive Merthyr Town side.

The visitors were given an early opportunity to open the scoring from the spot but Rihards Matrevics produced an excellent block with his legs. The Martyrs enjoyed the better of the opening 25 minutes but failed to make their superiority count.

The Greens then took control and went ahead after fine work by Liam Brooks fed Shaun Lucien who finished cutely, then a penalty just before the break saw Brooks' effort creep over the line after a valiant attempt by the Merthyr keeper to extend Hendon's lead.

The advantage was reduced after the break with a superb strike from Kieran Lewis and then the Greens came under heavy pressure but stood firm throughout to gain a vital win in their battle against the drop.

The club shop will be open from 9am on Saturday morning when the youth teams will be training, right through to the second half of our first team game with Merthyr Town. This is a prime opportunity to stock up on stocking fillers, main presents and maybe a cheeky little something for yourself ahead of the festive period and all the while supporting the Supporters Association and their tireless efforts in helping the club.

Tuesday 03 December - Buildbase competition update

As announced last week, Hendon finished as one of the top 6 clubs in the public vote to win 25k worth of building materials from Buildbase, sponsors of the FA Cup and FA Trophy.

On Monday 9th December Rob Morris will attend a session at Wembley Stadium to present to a panel explaining what the materials will be for and how they will benefit the local community.

The panel will be looking to hear a little about the history of the club, how it is owned and run these days and what the project that the materials will be going towards will provide.

There will also be a short video interview after which, all attendees will be given a behind the scenes tour of the home of English football.

Everyone at the club would like to wish Rob well for Monday and as soon as we here any further news on our application, we'll bring it to you.

Sunday 01 December - Chappell announces retirement

Lee Chappell has been in touch with Lee Allinson to announce his retirement from football with immediate effect.

Chaps came to prominence at Wealdstone where he made more than 300 appearances including one in that famous 5-4 win at Northwood in August 2005 and also in the final game at Claremont Road which the Stones went on to win 4-1.

He then moved onto St Albans City, making more than 200 appearances for the Saints before teaming up with Steve Castle at Royston Town and then with Jimmy Gray at Hendon in the summer of 2018.

Chaps was Jimmy's skipper and played a large part in our survival last term with his displays at left-back and leadership, particularly guiding younger players through games. He agreed to postpone his retirement for a further year in the summer before breaking his hand in the first half of his final appearance for the club in the 2-0 home win against Walton Casuals in October, but completing the full 90 minutes.

Lee made 57 appearances for the Greens, we thank him for his service not only to Hendon Football Club, but the Non-League game as a whole and wish him all the very best for whatever life brings next.
