Monday 28 January - Volunteer steps back after 25 years

We are sad this morning to have to confirm that one of our longest standing volunteers has decided to step back from his activities around Hendon FC. Steve Rogers has been a well known fixture around the club, both on matchdays and behind the scenes. Steve has spent time on the Supporters' Association committee, Supporters' Trust board and acted in various official positions for the football club itself over the last quarter of a century, while he has updated our website from day to day for most of the last 15 years.

Hendon FC chairman Simon Lawrence said: "After nearly 25 years of outstanding service, Steve Rogers has advised me that he is stepping down from his various duties with immediate effect. Since returning to the club, Steve has carried out a wide range of duties behind the scenes including helping in the Claremont Road tea bar, manning turnstiles and gates, contributing to the programme, updating the website, running Livescores (often despite not actually being at the game), going on scouting missions for managers, helping some of our youth managers and much, much more. He was even been pressed into service to run the line at what turned out to be our last ever league cup tie at Claremont Road!

As a club, we are grateful for all of the volunteers who are willing to give up so much of their time to keep the club ticking over but I would like to make special mention to the contribution that Steve has made over the past quarter of a century."

We thank Steve for all his efforts and hope he is able to enjoy his time as a supporter away from the concerns of his voluntary duties in the future.

Sunday 27 January - Clean sheet earns another point

Hendon's slow recovery continued yesterday afternoon as the Greens visited Beaconsfield Town and came away with a hard earned 0-0 draw. The game had few real changes, with the main incidents of note being an injury to Beaconsfield's Bajram Pasha that caused a delay in the first half - later confirmed as a broken arm - and a late second half red card for Romario Jonas following two cautions.

With the home side having picked up 13 points in their previous home games and the Greens' recent form the point has to be considered a good result and eyes will be on next week's visit of Sailsbury as James Gray's squad look to continue their gradual revival.

Friday 25 January - Several players move on

We are able to confirm the release of two members of this season's first team squad this morning. Adam Pepara and Shaun Lucien have both been released, Adam having made 11 appearances since his debut in early November and Shaun having made 15 since joining at around the same time. We thank them both for their efforts over the last three months and wish them all the best with their next clubs.

Meanwhile, Tyriq Hunte has gone to Hanwell Town of the Isthmian League South Central Division on Dual registration - this should allow him more match time in the short time. He remains available for the Greens, but this should allow him more game time in the coming weeks.

Thursday 24 January - Match tickets no longer online

We have taken the difficult decision to stop online ticket sales for the rest of the season. Selling online via SeeTickets has been a valuable experiment for us and has proven that a system that we may use in the future for high profile fixtures is workable, but the take up has been too low for us to put the effort into maintaining it in the short term. We thank those who have used our online ticketing in helping us test and refine it so that we understand how to make it workable.

Tickets for the remainder of the season will be available as usual on the turnstiles which remain cash only.

Tuesday 22 January - First team match off

With apologies to those who travelled, snow that has arrived in the last hour has been heavy enough to quickly obscure the pitch markings and the referee feels it is unlikely that they would remain uncovered for 45 minutes at a time to get a half of football in between clearing them.

We will advise of a new date as soon as we have it

Tuesday 22 January - Under 23s match postponed

This evening's under 23s match with Cockfosters has been postponed due to the conditions. The match has been rearranged for 2 weeks time.

Note that the first team fixture this evening is not under threat and will go ahead as planned - the snow that has been seen further north has not reached SJP at the time of writing

Tuesday 22 January - Dermot remembered at Tiverton game

Hendon’s match with Tiverton Town last Saturday was made into a special occasion as the club recognised former star Dermot Drummy, who died in November 2017.

Drummy played 348 times for Hendon in two spells from in the 1980s, scoring 62 goals and enjoyed much success with both Arsenal – where he had been an apprentice – and Chelsea’s youth teams. He also spent a season managing Crawley Town in 2016–17.

Always a team player, Dermot’s death hit his former team-mates hard and it was decided to hold a day of celebration for his life in the week of what would have been his 58th birthday.

The match was dubbed Dermot’s Game and as well as bucket collections for MIND and the Samaritans, a number of his former team-mates came to celebrate his career.

Ten stars from Dermot’s squads in the late 1980s were at Silver Jubilee Park and it gave many of Hendon’s older fans to chat with players who did so much for the club in the period.

By a happy coincidence, with Dermot in the No.7 shirt he wore with such distinction, the 10 would have made for a very formidable line-up:

1. Dave Root

2. Erskine Smart

3. Roger Wade

4. Andy O’Brien

5. Alan Campbell

6. Bob Dowie

7. Dermot Drummy

8. Duncan Hardy

9. Mick Kiely

10. Colin Tate

11. Gary Keen

A number of fans mused how this team would have fared if they had played in the game. Apart from the obvious age issue – Dermot left the Greens 30 years ago – but in their prime, the team would have been far too strong for Step 3 of Non-League football.

Dermot’s family was also at the game and they were blown away at the hospitality they were afforded. Two even have intimated they want to get involved with the club as volunteers.

Tuesday 22 January - Obi added on dual registration

Young forward Ogo Obi has been added to the squad in time for this evening's visit of Weymouth. Ogo is a former professional at Cardiff City who had previously impressed in Watford's youth setup. This season he started out with Hampton & Richmond Borough, before being picked up by Wealdstone just before Christmas.

Ogo joins us on dual registration from the Stones - we thank Wealdstone for their assistance with the signing and we hope he enjoys his time at SJP.

Tuesday 22 January - Gardiner-Smith added to squad

Ahead of this evening's visit from Weymouth, we are pleased to welcome Jacob Gardiner-Smith as James Gray's latest addition to his squad. Jacob is a 21 year old midfielder who joins us from St Alban's City, having previously spent 3 years in Russia with Dynamo Moscow and Zenit St Petersburg II.

We look forward to seeing Jacob pull on a green shirt and hope he enjoys his time with the club.

Saturday 19 January - Hendon earn first point in 7 weeks

James Gray's squad managed to stop the rot of a 9 match losing streak this afternoon, earning a point against visitors Tiverton Town. In ordinary circumstances Greens fans might be disappointed not to take all three - having been 2-0 up at half time - but the relief of not taking the losing streak into double figures will likely have trumped those feeling.

Bayley Brown opened the scoring in the 11th minute from close range, while Shaquille Hippolyte-Patrick doubled the lead just ten minutes later. However, the visitors came out stronger after half time and two quick in four minutes goals through Levi Landricombe and Tom Bath brought them level with around 40 minutes still to play.

Both sides had their chances to take the three points, but with both teams having gone through a tough patch of form they'll likely be happy just to have avoided chalking up a further defeat.

Saturday 19 January - Three more sign as Abrahams moves on

We are pleased to be able to confirm three new signings that were made ahead of today's match with Tiverton, while we also wish all the best to Tanasheh Abrahams, who has moved on

Tanasheh leaves us having made 5 appearances in recent weeks having made his debut in our 3-1 home defeat by Metropolitan Police last month. He has decided to return back to one of his old clubs, Wingate and Finchley, and he leaves with our best wishes for the next phase of his career.

Coming in the other direction are Sergio Manesio, Ryan Hope and Benjy Aghadiuno.

Sergio previously made several appearances during preseason for Hendon in 2012 and joins on dual registration from Hampton and Richmond Borough. He spent last season plying his trade in Canada and made his debut for the Beavers last week.

Ryan has most recently been playing as a regular for Southall with Boreham Wood, St. Albans City, Hayes and Yeading and Slough Town counted amongst his other previous clubs.

Finally we welcome Benjy Aghadiuno, an 18 year old forward who joins us on loan from Barnet. Benjy made 3 appearances for the Bees last season, while this term he has been gaining experience at a number of local non-league sides, most recently scoring 5 times in 15 appearances for Aylesbury united.

We thank both former Greens Gary McCann and Darren Currie for their assistance in ensuing that the signings of Sergio and Benjy have gone smoothly this week.

Tuesday 15 January - Hendon out of last cup

A 2-0 defeat by Hayes and Yeading United left Hendon without any chance of cup silverware this season, dropping out of the Middlesex Senior Cup in the Quarter Finals.

The Greens kept their clean sheet until midway through the first half when Ash Nzala was pulled down in the penalty area, allowing Duncan Culley to fire home from the penalty spot. It wasn't until the 72nd minute when the game was made all but safe though, Culley again the scorer.

Monday 14 January - Two in as Griffith moves on

We are pleased to be able to announce the signing of two new players this morning. 21 year old Andrew McCorkell has signed up for his second spell at the club having previously made 4 appearances for us in the 2016/17 season. Andrew is a former MK Dons goalkeeper who has spent the interim period with a number of clubs, including St Albans, Cheshunt, Egham and Hayes & Yeading,

Also arriving is Charlie Smith, a former professional with Luton Town. The 23 year old midfielder has spent a number of years with Hitchin Town in the Evostik league, making over 100 appearances for the Canaries and more recently has plied his trade at Welwyn Garden City, making around half a dozen appearances before moving on this month.

Unfortunately departing is Taishan Griffith, who is making the opposite journey to Welwyn to return to one of his former clubs. Taishan was one of James Gray's first signings and made an immediate impact on the team, making his debut on the first day of the season at Frome Town. Since then he has made 23 appearances for the Greens, most recently coming off the bench against Chesham United on New Years Day.

We'd like to thank Taishan for his efforts while at Silver Jubilee Park and wish him all the best in the next phase of his career.

Saturday 12 January - Greens slump to 8th consecutive defeat

James Gray's Hendon squad are still looking for their first points in over five weeks after Metropolitan Police inflicted their 8th defeat in a row, winning 3-0 at Imber Court.

At half time the home side were just one goal to the good, former Green Jack Mazzone capping a lovely move with a simple tap in midway through the half. The visiting squad re-grouped during the break and managed a brief spell of pressure, but in the 56th minute a poorly taken set piece allowed the Police to break quickly and play Max Blackmore in for a swift finish. Met Police weren't finished though and in the 79th minute they stamped their playoff credentials firmly on proceedings with a third goal after Jonathan Hippolyte broke clear.

Saturday 05 January - Strong start not enough to beat Kings

Despite a decent first half performance, Hendon are still to get off the mark for 2019 following a 2-1 defeat at home to Kings Langley this afternoon. Despite losing Connor Callcut midway through the first half, the Greens drew first blood, with Callcut's replacement Elliott Charles firing home just two minutes into his third spell at the club. A determined and composed defensive performance ensured that the home side reached half-time a goal up, allowing the visitors plenty of possession but few chances.

The second half, however, was different story. It took less than ten minutes for Kings Langley to draw level, Callum Adebiyi heading past Bowness before Rene Howe put them ahead in the 71st minute. The Greens misery was complete shortly before the final whistle when a bad tackle from Matty Harriott saw him dismissed and Hendon with just 10 men to chase the game.

Posted at 17:50

Friday 04 January - Charles re-signs for Hendon

We are delighted to be able to welcome Elliott Charles back to Hendon for his third spell with the club. With 15 goals in 46 games in green to date, Elliott is a well renowned forward who has spent a number of years plying his trade in Conference South in between his spells with us, most recently at Wealdstone where he netted four times in five appearances off the bench late last year.

Elliott signed forms earlier today and will be available for tomorrow's visit of King's Langley.

Tuesday 01 January - Greens succumb to late winner

Chesham United took the points today with a late strike at Silver Jubilee Park, leaving Jimmy Gray's squad looking at next Saturday's visit of King's Langley for their first points of 2019.

The visiting Generals continued their recent rich vein of form and belied their bottom half league position in taking the game to the Greens early on, but the two sides turned around at halftime with the game goalless. The second half proved a poor advert for the Southern League, but in the 90th minute a Bradley Clayton effort found the back of the net to take the victory.
