Marc Charles-Smith's first home game as Hendon manager ended in a tight defeat against Canvey Island in what was a rugged mid-table scrap.

The only goal of the game came midway through the second half as Chris Smith looped a header beyond Luke Campbell. The Greens were denied an equaliser firstly by a referee's whistle for an infringement as Stefan Ilic headed home, and then Dave Diedhiou was ruled offside as he crashed the ball home on his 500th competitive appearance.

This Saturday sees the Greens visit Chichester City at Oaklands Park, kicking off at 3pm.
