Hendon make their first away trip of the Southern League season when they travel to Wiltshire to take on Swindon Supermarine. Kick-off at Webbswood Stadium is at 3.00 pm tomorrow, when the advance weather forecast suggests were are in for an exceptionally hot afternoon.
The two teams had vastly different experiences on opening day. The Greens went down to a narrow and undeserved 1–0 defeat against Yate Town at Silver Jubilee Park while Marine scored three without reply as they went to Hartley Wintney and came home with three points.
New signing, former Yate striker James Harding converted a penalty and Tom Sharpe and Conor McDonagh – his 60th goal for the club – completed a happy opening day. Hartley Wintney, meanwhile, had former Hendon player Anis Nuur red-carded before half-time to make it a miserable afternoon.
The men from Webbswood have enjoyed a relatively quiet offseason and only two players made their debuts on Saturday, Sam Turl, a defender also from Yate, and Harding. Only four other players in the first-team squad joined in the off-season, defenders Wayne Nderemani (from Mangotsfield United)) and Leon Morrison (formerly at Highworth Town) and forwards Sal Abubakar (most recently with Met Police) and Lerone Plummer (from Bemerton Heath Harlequins).
Last season, Hendon were denied a win at Swindon in early October when Liam Brooks’ 33rd-minute goal was cancelled out by Bradley Hooper with just a couple of minutes remaining. In the return at SJP in January, Joe White scored the game’s only goal early in the second half. At the end of the campaign, Hendon were 10 points and four places behind Swindon.
