Hendon Under-21s played their much-postponed League Senior Open Cup third round tie at Broadfields United on Saturday, over months after it was originally scheduled.
The Greens made a good start against their Premier Division opponents and created four good openings. Unfortunately Hendon were unable to take any of them, though they did hit the woodwork and have another cleared off the line. Then, in the 21st minute, Broadfields showed how it should be done by converting their first real chance. Four minutes later they had doubled their lead and Hendon were left with a mountain to climb. They did reach base camp, however, in the 33rd minute, when the home goalkeeper made a hash of dealing with a corner and punched the ball into his own net. But, four minutes before half time, Broadfields restored their two-goal advantage.
Hendon tried hard to get back into the game in the second half, but, in the 80th minute, after making a number of personnel, tactical and positional changes, they left themselves over-committed to attack and conceded a fourth goal. "Broadfields’'finishing was more clinical than ours," admitted joint manager Eamon Finn. "The gulf between the Premier Division and us is not much, and Broadfields said some very nice things about us. We were a match for them everywhere on the pitch, except in front of goal. My man of the match was midfielder Dylan Agyako, who never stopped running and trying."
