We find ourselves back on track with a look back at matches on 15th March since 1908 and a day in which there is an equal split between wins, defeats and everything in-between.
The club’s first senior semi-final appearance came in the Middlesex Charity Cup against Southall in 1913 on the same day that Woodrow Wilson held the first US presidential press conference and Ollie Sumner netted in a 1-1 draw to secure a replay. Half a dozen years later the two sides met again in a friendly and a goal from F Congreve secured another 1-1 draw.
1924 saw a Freddie Young goal secure a 1-0 win in the Athenian League at Cheshunt before a 1930 visit to Sutton United saw the U’s comfortably win 3-0 also in the Athenian League.
In the Herts & Middlesex County League in 1941 a local derby with Wealdstone saw eight goals equally shared. Jack Birkbeck scored twice with John Griggs and Les Pulling also on target in the thrilling 4-4 draw, then in 1947 in the club’s first home match on 15th March, Met Police were beaten 3-2 in the London Senior Cup. Bernard Bryant scored twice and Laurie Topp grabbed the other goal.
There was another visit to Sutton in 1952 in the Athenian League as Roy Stroud scored in a 1-1 draw and six years later the Ambers’ near neighbours Carshalton Athletic came to Claremont Road in the same competition and returned with the points having scored the only goal of the game.
In 1965 a visit to Harrow Town in the Middlesex Senior Cup semi-final saw the Greens cruise to an 8-0 win to move into the final. Danny Lakey scored a hat-trick that was added to by a Jimmy Quail double and one each from Peter Slade, Roy Drake and Arthur Peel, this on the day that the first T.G.I Fridays opened in the USA. Four years later in 1969 Bobby Wilson and Micky Cannon struck in a 2-1 win over Dulwich Hamlet at Claremont Road as hundreds of Chinese and Russian troops are killed in border clashes.
In 1980 a visit to Slough Town ended in a 1-0 defeat in the Isthmian League and half a dozen years later as the funeral of murdered Prime Minister Olaf Palme took place in Sweden, Colin Tate’s goal at Claremont Road wasn’t enough to prevent the Greens falling to a 2-1 defeat against their East London opponents.
A couple of years later in 1988 another visit to Surrey, this time Carshalton, ended 1-1 with Dermot Drummy on target and in 1997 Frank Murphy’s tricky start to life as Hendon boss continued with a 2-0 defeat at Oxford City.
2003 saw Hu Jintao become President of the People’s Republic of China and also saw the Greens to huge win too against Braintree Town at Cressing Road as Kieron Gallagher and Ricci Crace found the net. Two years later in 2005 Leyton inflicted the first defeat of Gary McCann’s managerial career as they won by the only goal of the game at Lea Bridge Road.
Brian Haule and Casey Maclaren netted in a 2008 2-2 draw with Folkestone Invicta at Claremont Road as Wales beat France in Cardiff to complete a Six-Nations Grand Slam and it was honours even again in 2011 as Lowestoft Town were held at Vale Farm 1-1, Belal Aite-ouakrim netting for the Greens.
We finish in 2014 where another strike from Casey Maclaren, along with another from Leon Smith were enough to see Cray Wanderers beaten 2-0 at Earlsmead as Brian O’Driscoll ended his international Rugby Union career seeing Ireland lift the Six-Nations on points difference from England in his 141st international appearance.
Of the 18 matches to have taken place on 15th March it’s an even split with 6 wins, 6 draws and 6 defeats. 29 goals have been scored and 24 conceded.
