Our ‘on this day’ series continues unabated and moves onto 10th March and begins in 1923 with a 0-0 draw against Southall in the Middlesex Senior Cup about which there is little more to say aside from both sides earned the chance to do it all over again.
Staying with the Middlesex Senior Cup, RAF Uxbridge came to Claremont Road in 1928 and returned with a 2-0 win before Golders Green finally got things going on 10th March with a 5-0 win over Barking in the Athenian League in 1934. The prolific strike duo of Freddie Evans and Herbert Knott grabbed two goals each with Jimmy Spalton adding a fifth.
11-years later in 1945 as Japan granted Vietnam independence and Albert Kesselring succeeded Gerd von Rundstedt as commander of German Army Command in the west and in one of the most destructive air raids of the war the USAAF firebombed Tokyo, Mervyn Griffiths struck a hat-trick in the Middlesex Red Cross Cup as Wood Green Town were dismantled 8-0. Peter Bossoms, Roy Stroud, Mac Cochrane, F Finch and Fred Long were also on target to take Golders Green into the quarter-final.
Half a dozen years later in 1951 John Westmore and Bob Avis netted in a 2-0 win over Wimbledon in the Amateur Cup quarter-final replay to set up a last-four tie with Pegasus and in 1956 a Middlesex Senior Cup semi-final against Finchley at Lower Mead saw Jeff Darey, Jack Rawlings and Miles Spector grab the goals in a 3-1 success that saw them progress to take on Wembley in the-final.
Charlie Sells and Denny Smith were on the scoresheet in 1962 as the Greens beat Leyton 2-1 in the Athenian League before a 1964 match with Oxford City in front of a crowd of 1,125 at Claremont Road saw a point dropped in a 2-2 draw. Jimmy Quail and David Hyde were on target as the gap at the top of the table was extended to 5 points over Wimbledon, however the South Londoners now had three games in hand. Hendon were no longer masters of their own destiny.
A 1970 hosting of Woking in the Isthmian League did not go to plan as Peter Anderson and Bobby Wilson scored for the Greens, but three goals did the business for The Cards and saw them return to Surrey with the points. Three years later in another Middlesex Senior Cup semi-final Southall were beaten 2-0 at Claremont Road, Rod Haider and Keith Searle scoring the goals to set up a final against North London rivals, Enfield.
1979 saw the Greens fall to a 1-0 defeat to Barking and five years later Slough Town came to Claremont Road in yet another home match (10th match at home out of 12 to this point) and also returned with the points and a 1-0 win.
In 1988, having learned their lesson from those two previous matches, a goal from Iain Dowie settled a Middlesex Charity Cup semi-final at Hayes, the only goal of the game, to secure what is to date the club’s most recent and final appearance at Wembley Stadium where they would meet Wembley FC, this on the day that Prince Charles narrowly avoided being caught up in an avalanche in the Swiss Alps. Two years later in 1990 a visit to Staines Town ended in a 2-0 win with Steve Bracken grabbing both goals.
Chesham United enjoyed a bountiful haul in 1993 as they hammered the Greens 4-0 at Meadow Park on their way to the title before a 2007 visit of AFC Wimbledon led by former boss Dave Anderson saw a terrific fightback from Gary McCann’s side led by goals from Brian Haule, Belal Aite-ouakrim and Lee O’Leary secured a 3-1 win for the Greens after Roscoe D’Sane had given the visitors an early advantage.
O’Leary was on target again in 2009 in a third successful cup semi-final to have taken place on 10th March, this time against his old club, Wealdstone, and helping the Greens to a thrilling 4-3 win over their rivals. Jamie Busby, Sam Collins and Glenn Garner were also amongst the goals. Three years later in 2012 goals from Greg Ngoyi and Elliott Charles secured a 2-0 win against AFC Hornchurch at Vale Farm.
Lowestoft Town came to Earlsmead in 2014 and made the long journey back to East Anglia with a 1-0 win pocketed before a 2018 visit of Margate saw Josh Walker grab a crucial goal to secure a 1-1 draw with their fellow play-off chasers.
Of 20 matches to have been played to date on 10th March there have been 12 wins, three draws and five defeats. 39 goals have been scored and 21 conceded.
