6th March has proven to be a trickier day than many that we’ve had a look back but there is one definite highlight along the way as well as a day that a midfielder of a certain vintage can look back on with some degree of fondness.

We begin in 1915 on the day that King Constantine I of Greece fired his Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos and a wartime friendly against the Sportsman’s Battalion at The Avenue Ground that saw Hampstead Town cruise to a 3-0 win. Goalkeeper W Winyard gets a mention in despatches for two ‘meritorious’ saves from former Bristol City man Owers. T Poltock gave Town the early lead that was added to before the break by a strike from F Gooding – this after Bill Hooper had squandered a penalty kick. Arthur Humphreys completed the scoring in the second half.

The first competitive match on this day took place in 1920 as Uxbridge Town made the trip to The Avenue Ground in the Athenian League only to be well beaten 5-0. Future full England international George Blackburn scored twice, as did J Croal with F Yates grabbing one. After that promising start things rather fell apart over the next 45-years beginning in 1926 as Redhill won 3-1, also in the Athenian League.

Fred Boston scored for Golders Green in a 1937 league match against Romford, however the east Londoners netted three of their own to take the points before a 1948 Amateur Cup tie against Leytonstone at Claremont Road saw the Greens knocked out 4-1, Pat Lynch grabbing the Hendon goal in the quarter final against the eventual champions.

Three defeats in succession became four in 1954 as Hounslow Town knocked the Greens out of the Middlesex Senior Cup 3-2, Cliff Knock and Ron Stanton grabbing the Hendon goals. That run was finally ended in 1965 when, in another Amateur Cup semi-final, the long trip to Whitley Bay ended in success for the Greens as two goals from David Hyde and another from Peter Slade secured a 3-1 win and a local derby in the semi-final against Finchley.

That win proved to be a mere flash in the pan as two years later a home match with Walthamstow Avenue in the Isthmian League ended in a 1-0 defeat, this on the same day that Muhammed Ali was ordered by selective service to be inducted into the armed forces and Svetlana Allilujeva, Stalin’s daughter, approached the US Embassy in New Delhi asking for political asylum.

A 1976 league match with Kingstonian ended 0-0 half a dozen years before a visit to Leatherhead’s Fetcham Grove ended in a 2-1 defeat, Dermot Drummy grabbing the solitary Hendon goal. The Greens’ luck finally changed once again in 1993 with a 2-0 win over Sutton United at Gander Green Lane thanks to two goals from midfielder Jon Daly.

Daly clearly caught the taste for goalscoring on 6th March as six years later to the day he decided to grab two more, this time in a 7-goal thriller against St Albans City which additional strikes from Simon Clarke and Junior Lewis secured a 4-3 win. A year to the day later and another home match against a Hertfordshire rival, this time Hitchin Town, ended all-square thanks to a Dominic Gentle goal that gave Frank Murphy’s side a 1-1 draw.

In 2004 Eugene Ofori was on target to give Dave Anderson’s side a 1-0 win at Northwood, that before a 2010 visit of Tonbridge Angels to Vale Farm where Gary McCann’s charges picked up a very rare point against their Kentish rivals in a goalless draw.

We finish with two thrilling Middlesex Senior Cup semi-finals against Hampton & Richmond Borough, alas with both matches ending in defeat. Firstly a visit to the Beveree in 2012 saw the Greens battle back from going 2-0 down early on thanks to strikes from Carl McCluskey and Michael Peacock. Dave Tarpey grabbed the winner for the Blue Square South side in the 89th minute to knock the Greens out of the competition.

Two years later at Earlsmead each side went one better. Jack Bennett gve the Greens the lead that was equalised by Aaron Wickham. Dave Diedhiou restored the Hendon advantage only for current skipper Tommy Brewer to level with a deflected effort that looped over Berkley Laurencin. Michael Murray gave the Greens the lead for the third time ten minutes before the break only for former Hendon star Belal Aite-ouakrim to equalise just before the hour mark. The game’s pivotal moment came in the 81st minute Laurencin was adjudged to have clipped Aite-Ouakrim as the striker ran through on goal and was dismissed. Wickham stepped up and drilled home the winner.

All in all of 16 matches to have taken place on 6th March there have been five wins, three draws and eight defeats. 27 goals have been scored and 28 conceded.
