Our look back at matches in the club’s history moves on to 4th March and begins in 1911 on the day that Victor Berger of Wisconsin becomes the 1st socialist congressman in the US. Hampstead Town took on Campsbourne Institute in the Finchley & District League 1st Division and handed out a 7-0 thumping on their way to a third consecutive title win.
11-years later in 1922 as the silent German classic vampire film Nosferatu premiered in Berlin Southall won an Athenian League match by the only goal and then in 1933 as Dollfuss dissolved the Austrian Parliament and Franklin Roosevelt was inaugurated as the 32nd US President pledging to pull the US out of the Great Depression, a hat-trick from Freddie Evans set the club on its way to a 7-1 win over Romford in the Athenian League. Ronnie Rowe grabbed two goals whilst Jimmy Spalton and Herbert Knott grabbed one each.
Another 11-year gap saw Southall beaten 3-2 in 1944, this time in the wartime Herts & Middlesex County League, two George Bucci goals and another from Cyril Goodchild doing the damage on the day that the USAAF bombed Berlin for the first time before a 1950 London Senior Cup tie against Woodford Town ended in a 5-0 win. Eric Joyce netted twice whilst Ted Owen, Bill Reay and Bob Avis were also on target.
1961 saw a Norman Field goal be enough to defeat Enfield in the Athenian League before a 1967 Isthmian League match-up with Sutton United saw a comfortable 4-1 success with Tony Harding on target with two goals that were added to by Roy Sleap and Jimmy Quail to make it five consecutive wins on March 4th.
That run came to a shuddering halt two years later as a visit to Kingstonian went wrong, the K’s winning the 1969 fixture 3-0 on the day that the Kray twins are convicted of murder before a 1972 Amateur Cup 3rd round replay against Maidenhead United ended 1-0 to the Greens thanks to a Tony Bass strike.
The Greens shook off the dismissal of goalkeeper Gary Steel in a 1978 Middlesex Senior Cup tie against Hayes to claim a 0-0 draw and a replay however there was less luck in a 1986 Middlesex Charity Cup tie against Kingsbury Town at Silver Jubilee Park as the hosts on that day cruised to a 3-1 win in what was Hendon’s second competitive visit to their future home. Dereck Brown was the Greens’ goalscorer.
The following year goals from Dermot Drummy, Iain Dowie and Colin Tate laid the basis for a 3-1 London Senior Cup win over Bromley, then as President Mitterrand inaugurated the pyramid that stands outside The Louvre in Paris a visit to Bognor Regis Town ended in a 2-0 defeat at Nyewood Lane.
1995 saw another defeat, this time to Aylesbury United at Buckingham Road before a 1999 visit to Canvey Island in the Full Members Cup saw goals from Jon Daly and Matt Maran do the necessary to defeat the Islanders and set up a quarter-final appointment with Chesham United.
Rob Haworth netted the only goal of the game in 2003 as Kingstonian were knocked out of the Isthmian League Cup to set up a last-four two-legged affair with the aforementioned Canvey Island and in 2006 Dave Hunt grabbed the Hendon goal in a 1-1 draw with fellow strugglers Slough Town.
A 2014 visit to Carshalton Athletic ended in success as Lee O’Leary and Leon Smith netted in a 2-0 win at Colston Avenue before goals from Keagan Cole and Reis Stanislaus secured a crucial 2-1 win over Leiston, ensuring an unhappy return to Silver Jubilee Park for Niko Muir, the dismissal of Arthur Lee not proving too costly.
Finally, last year saw the longest away midweek journey for a league tie as the Greens produced an outstanding first-half attacking performance followed up by a brilliant second-half rearguard to return from Taunton Town with a 3-3 draw for the second season in succession. Luca Allinson, Joe White and Simeon Olalerin had given the Greens a 3-1 advantage but the barrage from the Peacocks was ultimately too much to withstand and a share of the spoils was the right result on the night.
20 matches have been played on 4th March to date with 12 wins, three draws and five defeats. 43 goals have been scored and 20 conceded.
