Today, in the first of three pieces, we take our look back at the club’s on-field performances to 27th February and begin way back in the depths of the first winter of World War 1, 1915 with a local friendly derby against Shepherd’s Bush in which recent addition F K Gooding netted the game’s solitary goal.
Competitive action began in 1926 with another local derby, this time against Enfield in the Athenian League at The Avenue Ground and goals from J Ashby (2), Oscar Reinke (also 2) and George Bucci secured a comfortable 5-1 win. Six-years later in 1932 Hitchin Town came to Claremont Road in the Amateur FA Senior Cup and returned back up the A1 with a 2-0 win.
Things got little better in 1937 on the same day that Donald Bradman plundered the English attack for 169 in little over 3½ hours at Melbourne, so Barking plundered four goals in an Athenian League tie in a 4-1 defeat for Golders Green, E Soden grabbing the consolation. Half a dozen years later in 1943 a Herts and Middlesex County League match with St Albans City ended 2-2, Dave Chappell grabbing the two Golders Green goals.
Sutton United came to Claremont Road in 1954 in the Athenian League and played out a 0-0 draw before a 1960 Amateur Cup replay saw West Auckland Town beaten 2-0 at Claremont Road thanks to strikes from Arthur Figg and Miles Spector. This set up a semi-final grudge match against Enfield which was scheduled for a fortnight later at Highbury.
In 1965 the Greens shrugged off the loss of John Swannell and David Hyde who were on international duty in Dublin for England Amateurs to beat Dulwich Hamlet 3-0 to maintain their four-point advantage over Enfield at the top of the table. Jimmy Quail was on target as was Danny Lakey with two goals, the second of which was the 100th league goal of the season only 31 matches.
Micky Cannon was on target in 1971 in a 2-1 defeat against Tooting & Mitcham at Claremont Road before an FA Trophy replay in 1978 against Bedford Town ended in defeat by the same scoreline, Roy Butler grabbing the Hendon goal. That run of defeats continued a year later as Enfield won 2-0 in the Middlesex Senior Cup and then in 1982 Staines Town added to the malaise with a 2-1 win at Claremont Road, Paul Bhatia with the Hendon goal.
The ship was steadied in 1988 as Mick Kiely’s goal beat Barking 1-0 at Claremont Road but there was a further defeat in 1990 as the rum ration was dished out on ships in the Royal New Zealand Navy for the final time a visit to The Warren ended in defeat as Yeading won in the Middlesex Senior Cup 2-1, Gary Keen netting for the Greens.
1993 was another home win against Dulwich Hamlet, this time 2-1 and with Leo Fortune-West and Zimbabwean Anthony Sibanda on target and 1996 saw a goalless draw grab a vital point at Grays Athletic as Pokemon made its first appearance in a video game over in Japan.
1999 saw Conference Champions -elect Cheltenham Town comfortably knock the Greens out of the FA Trophy at Whaddon Road 3-0 before a 2001 visit to Enfield, who were playing at Boreham Wood at the time, saw Rene Street and Marvyn Watson net in a 2-0 success.
There was another 2-0 win in 2010 as the Greens went to Imperial Fields and beat Tooting & Mitcham United, Anthony Thomas opening the scoring in the first half with a low shot that squirmed underneath former Green Dave King’s body before Belal Aite-ouakrim sealed the points in the second half with a sumptuous lob over the giant custodian. A third successive 2-0 win saw secured in 2016 at Earlsmead as a Tony Taggart double, one of which came direct from a corner kick, saw Staines Town beaten 2-0 to grab a crucial, and very welcome 3-points for Gary McCann’s side.
All of which has meant that from 19 matches, 8 apiece have been won and lost with the other three ended all-square. 26 goals have been scored and 23 conceded.
