Today sees us look back at matches that have occurred on 15th February and we begin in 1913 with a London League Division 1 match at Deptford Invicta which was won 3-2 thanks to a brace from Herbert Pike and one from Gordon Marchant.

Moving forward to 1919 and Darracq came out on top in the post-World War I United Senior League with a 2-0 win before Barnet provided the opposition in the Middlesex Senior Cup in 1930, A Potter’s goal a mere consolation in a 2-1 defeat.

In 1936 as Adolf Hitler announced the construction of what became the Beetle in Germany and Great Britain’s 0-0 tie with the USA saw them clinch a first ever Olympic Ice Hockey gold medal at Garmish-Partenkirchen, in rather milder climes Golders Green defeated Clapton 4-0 in the London Senior Cup with a couple of goals from Mike Fallon along with one each from Tommy Evans and and own goal doing the damage.

Another London Senior Cup tie in 1941 ended in disaster as Barnet once again provided the cup conquerors as they dished out a 7-1 humiliation, Bill Boston grabbed the Golders Green goal, yet things went rather better in 1958 as Wealdstone were beaten 6-1 at home in the Middlesex Senior Cup. Tommy Lawrence helped himself to a hat-trick whilst Jack Rawlings, Micky Moore and Miles Spector grabbed one each.

Tony Knox and Gerry O’Rourke were the goalscorers as Wycombe Wanderers were beaten 2-1 in the Isthmian League in 1964 and 5-years later in 1969 North Shields made the long journey to NW2 in an Amateur Cup replay and returned northwards with a 2-0 win in their back pockets.

Wealdstone grabbed some revenge for their 1958 humiliation in 1977 as they beat the Greens 1-0 in the Middlesex Senior Cup and then in 1990 strikes from Colin Sowerby (2), Mark Xavier and Robbie Garvey saw Bognor Regis Town beaten 4-1.

Mark Dawber’s goal at Bishop’s Stortford in 1997 was not enough to prevent the Greens slipping deeper into the mire, nor could it prevent manager Neil Price from being sacked after the game by chairman Ivor Arbiter after 14 months in the job. A run of just 1 win in 14 matches was deemed unacceptable and the former Watford full-back saw his luck run out.

Davis Haule netted at Vale Farm in 2001 to help sink his old club Wembley in a Middlesex Senior Cup replay – only the second time the Greens had been in action since the original tie had been played exactly a month before – David Adekola also scored in the 2-0 win and as protests sweep the streets of London with people against the Iraq war, Rob Haworth’s goal was enough to defeat Maidenhead United in the league in 2003.

Gary McCann’s second game as manager ended in a 0-0 draw against Chelmsford City in 2005, a first home clean sheet in the league for more than four months, this on the day that YouTube was launched and finally in 2014 a terrific performance saw Leon Smith mark his first Hendon start with a goal in a 4-1 win at Kingstonian. Anthony Thomas led the way with two goals whilst Jack Bennett added the other.

Of 15 matches to have been played to date on 15th February, 8 have been won, just the 1 drawn and 6 lost. 29 goals have been scored and 22 conceded.
