We continue our journey through the hive mind of our expert panel by taking a look through the list of seven defensive midfielders to make the shortlist.
This list has a decidedly modern look to it with three players from the past 12 years making the grade, however looking further back, so real class from yesteryear including an Olympian who is one of the most decorated players to have represented the club.
Laurie Topp: 587 appearances, 16 goals (1944 – 1961)
Won 32 England Amateur international caps and represented Great Britain at the 1956 Olympic Games. Won 3 Athenian League titles, scored in the 1960 FA Amateur Cup final success as well as 3 Middlesex Senior Cups and 5 Middlesex Charity Cups.
Roy Sleap: 288 appearances, 31 goals (1960 – 1961 & 1963 - 1970)
Part of the 1965 treble winning side that won the FA Amateur Cup, Isthmian League and Middlesex Senior Cup. Missed out on 2 London Senior Cup triumphs the 1967 Middlesex Senior Cup victory despite being regular in all three seasons.
Tony Gibson: 95 appearances, 7 goals (1986 – 1988)
Won the Middlesex Senior Cup in 1986 and reached 2 cup finals the following season, losing in both the Isthmian League Cup and Inter-League (GMAC) Cups.
Jon Daly: 203 appearances, 26 goals (1992 – 1994, 1998 – 2001)
Won both the Full Members Cup and Middlesex Senior Cup in 1999, also appeared in the successful FA Cup sides of the late 1990s appearing against Notts County and Blackpool.
Casey Maclaren: 358 appearances, 51 goals (2007 - 2018)
3-time London Senior Cup winner, also won the Isthmian League Cup and Middlesex Senior Cup as well as appearing in two Isthmian League play-off finals. Scored the vital goal to keep us up against Staines on the final day of the 2016/7.
Kevin Maclaren: 295 appearances, 8 goals (2008 - 2017)
3-time London Senior Cup winner and skippered the successful 2015 side that won the Isthmian League Cup and Middlesex Senior Cup, and that reached the final of the Isthmian League play-off final the same season.
Dave Diedhiou: 382 appearances, 43 goals (2008 – 2019)
Scored the final Hendon goal at Claremont Road. Won 2 London Senior Cup winner’s medals, an Isthmian League Cup winner’s medal and one in the Middlesex Senior Cup as well. Played in two Isthamian League play-off finals too.
