Every successful side needs a solid base behind them from which to launch attacks and Hendon have been blessed over the years with plenty of fine goalkeepers as the last line of defence.
Our panel has come up with five to have represented the club with particular disctinction over the year.
Peter Shearing: 97 appearances (1956 – 1960)
Member of the 1960 FA Amateur Cup winning side before turning professional with West Ham United and going on to make 245 Football League appearances.
Mike Pinner: 41 appearances (1961 – 1962)
Although no honours were won whilst at Hendon, Mike won 52 caps for England Amateurs, he had played for Manchester United as an amateur in the top division and did the same for Leyton Orient as a professional
John Swannell: 594 appearances (1963 – 1974 & 1980 – 1981)
Won 2 Isthmian League championships and 2 FA Amateur Cups, appearing in a further final, 5 Middlesex Senior Cups and 2 London Senior Cups. Appeared in the famous 1-1 draw with Newcastle United in the FA Cup 3rd Round in 1974 and both legs of the Barassi Cup win in 1973. Also won 61 caps for England Amateurs.
Dave Root: 442 appearances (1986 – 1994)
Won the Middlesex Charity Cup at Wembley Stadium in 1988 and Full Members Cup in 1994, also part of the 1988 side that got to the FA Cup 1st Round, losing 4-2 at Reading. Moved onto Kingstonian
Gary McCann: 196 appearances (1997 – 2003)
Won the Middlesex Senior Cup and 2 Full Members Cups, part of the 1997 side that beat Leyton Orient in the FA Cup and made appearances against Blackpool and Notts County in the same competition. Would have made many more appearances but for serious injury that cut his career short.
We'll be bringing you the shortlist of full-backs later on this evening, keep your eyes peeled for them.
