This Saturday sees one of our longest serving supporters mark their 60th anniversary of their first Hendon match.
Chris Rogers, one of our regular turnstile operators, first visited Claremont Road as a 14 year old in January 1960 for our FA Amateur Cup tie with Wimbledon and went on to follow the club to Wembley and that famous late victory over Kingstonian.
From the following season onwards, Chris was a regular face home and away until work took him to the Portsmouth area in 1980. During the 13 years of exile, he would often take his sons to Hendon games at Fareham Town, Bognor Regis Town and Basingstoke Town, amongst others, before a move to Watford in 1992 saw a return to regular attendance during the summer of 1995.
Since then, Chris and his sons have become an integral part of things around the club with Chris not only becoming a regular on the gate, but putting in countless hours of research into helping us provide such a rich archive that is held on the website.
His eldest son, Steve, spent more than a decade on the turnstiles at Claremont Road and marshalling the matchday volunteers, and even longer providing the day-to-day updates to Greensnet, whilst also providing invaluable levels of support to various youth team managers, Graham Etchell, Daz Bloor and Gary McCann over the past two decades until his retirement last year.
Chris' youngest son, Phil, is the brains behind Greensnet having designed and maintained the website for the last 20 years and is already working on the next iteration that he hopes to launch in the summer. In addition, Phil was one of the founding fathers of the Supporters Trust and was, for many years, joint chairman with Bryan Roberts.
None of this would have been possible without Chris choosing that Wimbledon cup tie with a friend almost 60 years ago and passing on his love and passion of all things Hendon down through his sons and now into a third generation with his grandchildren Elsie and James.
To mark the many years of service the Rogers family have provided to Hendon Football Club, a sign will be unveiled on Saturday afternoon outside the turnstiles as a token of recognition and our thanks and gratitude.
