Tomorrow evening sees us kick off our home campaign with the visit of Metropolitan Police.
The Met are coming off the back of the finest season in their history and one which, in any other year, would have seen them gain promotion to the National League South.
After finishing last season in third place, they beat Salisbury in the play-off semi-final before despatching Poole Town in the final to take them into the Step 3 South Super Final against Isthmian League side Tonbridge Angels. It proved a step too far for the Blues, as they went down 3-2 at Imber Court.
In addition to their near success in the league, which included a double over the Greens (3-1 at home and 3-0 at Imber Court), they hosted Newport County in the first round of the FA Cup, going down 2-0 to the Exiles, and won the Surrey Senior Cup with a 2-0 win over Tooting & Mitcham United.
In spite of losing some crucial players (Ethan Chislett has joined Aldershot Town and striker Max Blackmore has re-signed for Westfield), boss Gavin MacPherson has kept the nucleus of last season's side together including, crucially, Jack Mazzone who will be well known to Greens fans for his spell with us towards the beginning of the decade. One or two additions have also been made including Bilal Sayoud, who made a couple of substitute appearances for us last season, following his release by Enfield Town.
Their season didn't begin as they might have liked, however, as they went down 2-0 at Imber Court against the other newly relegated side from the National League South, Truro City. They will be keen to get their season up and running at the second time of asking whilst Jimmy Gray will be looking to build on the encouraging display at Weston-super-Mare on Saturday afternoon.
