This season will see a moment of history, as we play our first ever league game outside of England, when we travel into Wales to play Merthyr Town.
The current incarnation of Merthyr Town, who like ourselves are 100% supporters trust owned, were formed following the liquidation of Merthyr Tydfil at the end of the 2009-10 season after finishing 17th in the Southern League Premier Division. The reformed club were forced to drop three divisions and so began life in the Western League Division One.
They won Division One in their first season and were promoted to the Western League Premier Division winning a second consecutive championship and thus promotion back to the Southern League, and in 2015 they were promoted back to the Southern League Premier Division.
The original Merthyr Town club was formed in 1909, and played in the Football League in the 1920s, but folded in 1934. They were replaced by Merthyr Tydfil in 1945 who initially joined the Welsh League, before spending many years in the Southern League.
We played Merthyr Tydfil in an FA Cup tie at Penydarren Park in 1973, when we ran out 3-0 winners, with our reward being that famous trip to Newcastle United in the Third Round in January 1974.
