Roy Sleap joined Hendon in September 1960, after representing Great Britain at the Rome Olympic Games. Although only 19, he had already carved out a big reputation at Barnet, earning England and Great Britain representative honours as a teenager - a rare distinction at the time. Technically Roy was not a Hendon player when appearing twice, in Rome, including against the hosts. He had re-signed as a member of Barnet, but had not actually signed for Hendon, even if it was known that was his intention. At Claremont Road, Roy had giant shoes to fill as he was replacing arguably the finest player ever to represent Hendon, Laurie Topp. He made his debut against Grays Athletic, a match the Greens would win 3-0. Roy made 20 appearances during the season as Hendon won the Athenian League title by a point from Wealdstone, with Barnet a further two points adrift.
Before the start of the 1961-62 season, Roy - along with Terry Howard and Jimmy Quail - joined Enfield, where they would stay for two seasons. When the Es, Sutton United and Hitchin Town all switched from the Athenian League to the Isthmian, Jimmy and Roy returned to Claremont Road, where they enjoyed great success. Hendon missed out on the title by six points, finishing runners-up behind Wimbledon, while Roy was absent for the London Senior Cup final victory against Enfield having picked up a knee injury. He did earn another England Amateur cap during the season.
The 1964–65 season was the greatest in Hendon history and Roy played a huge part in it, normally at a left-back, though he later became what we now call a midfielder, then a half-back. The Greens won the FA Amateur Cup, 3-1 against Whitby Town, the Isthmian League title in a playoff against Enfield, 4-1 at Dulwich, and the Middlesex Senior Cup, 1-0 over Finchley, in the last three games of the season. There was also the London Challenge Cup victory over Arsenal at Highbury – when Hendon came back from 3-0 down to win 4-2 and a narrow 2-1 FA Cup first round reverse away at Port Vale. Roy - who wore the No.3 shirt in all of those games - missed just three out of 58 matches in the season, and registered his first Hendon goal, the Green's only one in a 1-1 draw at Oxford City. He also added to his list of representative honours, playing for England, the FA XI and London teams during the season.
Apart from a return to Wembley in the Amateur Cup final - where Wealdstone beat Hendon 3-1 - it was not a happy cup season for Hendon, and they played only 15 knock-out matches, but Roy played in all but one of the Greens' 53 outings, scoring nine times. Roy was exceptionally strong and would rarely lose a tackle, but could also pass the ball well when necessary, though he would usually feed it to a playmaker in front of him. Over the next three seasons, Hendon's levels of success dipped and the team showed numerous changes. Roy, by now a midfield linchpin, playing alongside Rod Haider, had his most prolific season in 1966-67, scoring 12 times in 51 appearances and he was one of four Hendon players who took to the field at Claremont Road when Great Britain played a 1968 Olympic Games qualifying match against West Germany. Sadly it was the visitors who won 1-0 as Great Britain failed to qualify for the Games in Mexico City. Roy also added to his collection of England Amateur Caps, finishing with 16 in total, the majority whilst with Hendon.
Roy briefly left Hendon during the 1967-68 season, and made only 37 appearances in all. The following season, Roy moved to Slough Town, but did return to Claremont Road for a special match on 13 April 1969, when the current Hendon team took on the 1965 FA Amateur Cup winners. Amazingly, only four years after the victory at Wembley, just John Swannell and David Hogwood were still at Claremont Road, and the Amateur Cup-winners ran out 3-1 winners. Roy made his final Hendon appearance on the opening day of the 1970-71 season, but was substituted by John Baker in a 3-2 home defeat against Barking. With his chances at Claremont Road extremely limited, Roy returned to Slough, before moving on to Sutton United a few weeks later. He retired as a player at Guildford City, and went into management at Slough, taking the Rebels into the Isthmian top division in his first season, 1973-74.
