Gary McCann was disconsolate after the defeat against Hampton & Richmond Borough.
Soon after the match, he said, "This might be one of the most disappointing defeats I have suffered since I became manager here."
This morning, he added, "I spent a sleepless night, tossing and turning, and thinking about what I could have done differently. I should have gone with my gut when it came to the last substitution - the first two were forced on me by injuries - and shored up the defence with Elliott Brathwaite, because I wasn't sure we could hold on to a 3–2 lead.
"A number of players put their hands up in the dressing rom, but as I said to them, this was not down to individuals, but we are all collectively responsible. However, I am pleased that they recognised their mistakes, because if you know you are doing something wrong, you will try to avoid making the same mistake again. It also showed me what an honest group of players I have in my dressing room.
"Just before half-time, I was thinking that if we got into the dressing rooms only 1-0 down we will have escaped, because we had been so poor. But Kevin's injury meant the Hampton midfield had more space and that led to the second goal.
"It was a real kick in the teeth. However, the response from the boys in the second half was truly memorable. At 3-2 up we had a few chances to make the game safe but we didn't take them."
