Those at last night's match against Whitehawk may have noticed the above "Twitter Hash Tag" on the Hendon strip. That is because Hendon F.C. have donated their shirt sponsorship for the rest of the season to national football charity Street League. A "hash tag" lets users of the social network follow hot topics - and of course youth unemployment is a very hot topic in the UK right now. Both Hendon FC and Street League see this as an innovative way to promote the charity.
Street League "change lives through football" across the UK for some of the one million unemployed 16-25 year olds. This involves free weekly football sessions that participants attend, before joining an 8-week "academy" course in which they gain 3 nationally accredited qualifications, help with their CV, interview practice, play 11-a-side matches, improve their fitness and much more. At the end of the course, participants are much more motivated and job ready; indeed 76% of current Street League graduates move on into further employment, education or training.
Street League are delighted by the good will expressed by the donation. Chief Executive Matt Stevenson-Dodd said: "We are very grateful to Hendon FC for their support. Football is our national game and, through our work at Street League, we know how it can be used to help turn lives around every day."
Street League currently operates in six areas over London and within six cities in the UK: Glasgow, Edinburgh, London, Liverpool, Manchester and Newcastle – and will be in 12 be the end of 2014.
There will be further information on Street League in the programm and online, including a look at how local young people have been helped over forthcoming months. In the meantime if you're on Twitter, please follow @Street_League and support their crucial work helping the most disadvantaged young people into work and have a look at Street League’s website: www.streetleague.co.uk.
