Whitmarsh, who signed for Hendon in November 1997, struggled last season to find the form he showed in 1998-99, when he scored over 40 goals, but remained one of the most feared strikers in the Ryman League. "Paul is going to sign for Welling United," said Hendon manager Frank Murphy, his boss at their former clubs Dulwich. "We have now lost two of the best players in the League under the Bosman ruling with Junior Lewis going to Gillingham last season. It just means I have got to find some new players of that quality, but they don't fall from trees. Paul decided he wanted a new challenge, playing in a new or different league and Welling is very close to his home, so it is local even though there will be much more travelling in the (Dr Martens) Southern League."
