Match Report

Hampstead Town dropped two Athenian League points at Southall on Wednesday, House scoring the only goal of the match for the home side.

From the West Middlesex Gazette, 11 March 1922 :

Brilliant goalkeeping by both goalkeepers, fine back play by Harry for Southall and Brooker for Hampstead Town, and a remarkable goal by House that won Southall the two points, were the outstanding features in a keenly-contested game at Western-road, Southall, on Wednesday. There was only a small gate.

In spite of the treacherous condition of the ground, which, together with a strong, gusty wind that blew, made ball control and accurate passing difficult, some capital football was witnessed and there were plenty of thrills during the ninety minutes of a strenuous struggle. There was very little to choose between the two teams, both being very sound in defence and smart forward.

Opening with the wind and sun in their favour, Hampstead Town had slightly more of the game. Early on Wise was responsible for two shots, but Holding had little difficulty in saving, and Brewer sent over the bar with a good attempt from a distance. Southall then attacked strongly and Alford from close in smartly headed in a well-placed centre from Fabury, but fortunately for Evans the ball came straight at him and he was able to clear. After Evans had ably disposed of a shot by Alford, Holding, at the other end, made a fine full-length save from Smith. The game went quickly from end to end, each goalkeeper being called upon in turn. A pretty run by the Southall left wing ended in Buttrey shooting behind. Then Holding was in demand again and after clearing a good shot from Day he made a splendid save when he pushed out of the top corner a fine shot from Smith. Southall again took over the attack for a time and Morey wound up a capital run with an excellent centre, from which Watts, attempting a first-time shot, miskicked and lost a good oppportunity. Alford broke through but Evans dashed out and made a fine clearance. Holding made two good saves from Day and Smith, and then Alford, receiving a splendid pass from Buttrey close in, missed a glorious opening by shooting high over the bar. Hampstead Town were again dangerous, but Holding ran out and smartly cleared, and then Evans punched out a promising centre by Morey and made a grand full-length save from a fast drive by Wenham. Half-time : Southall, 0 ; Hampstead Town, 0.

In the second half, with the advantage of the wind, Southall had more of the play than Hampstead had had in the first half. The game continued fast and hotly contested, there being exciting moments at both ends. Both defences were very sound and the goalkeepers had little to do, Evans having most of what work there was going. He made a marvellous save soon after the game resumed. Running out to meet Alford, who had got through, he partially cleared. The ball came to Watts who shot into the open goal, but Evans, as he was running back, made a leap for the ball and thrust it out for a corner. The next incident of note in a good deal of midfield play was a capital shot by Morey inches over the bar. A quarter of an hour from the end came Southall's goal in extraordinary fashion. House took a long pull from somewhere near the half-way line - a powerful shot right on the mark - and Evans, totally deceived, failed in his effort to smother the ball and it bounced up into the net. Hampstead fought determinedly and kept the result in doubt until the end, but the only remaining shot of note was a fine effort of Buttrey's that skimmed the bar. Result : Southall, 1 ; Hampstead Town, 0.
