Match Report

The keenly anticipated meeting of Hampstead Town and St. Albans City, old championship rivals in the Athenian League, attracted nearly five thousand spectators to the Child's Hill enclosure, and a fine sporting contest resulted in another win for the visitors by three goals to one.

It is noteworthy that the only two defeats suffered by Hampstead this season on their own ground have been inflicted by St. Albans, who were admittedly fortunate in bagging the points on this occasion, for Hampstead enjoyed the largest measure of attack and often had the visiting defence in a tangle, but otherwise suffered atrociously.

To the credit of the two clubs, and the competition in which they play, not a single foul was recorded throughout the game, and Mr. A.E. Blackman, the official in charge, expressed to both teams his immense satisfaction at such a remarkably clean yet fast and exciting encounter.

Fifteen minutes from the start a splendid combinational movement initiated by Hampstead's captain, C. Wise, resulted in S. Howard scoring a particularly fine goal, but immediately following this effort and at a later stage in the game the St. Albans goal bore a charmed existence.

The visitors' goals were all scored in the second half by P. Pierce, W. Minter and S. Hankey, and neither side secured any material advantage from a strong wind, all the goals being got against that element. R. Kirby's absence from the Hampstead side was compensated for by the inability of H.E. Miller, through injuries, to assist the visitors.

Tomorrow (Saturday) the semi-final of the Middlesex Senior Cup will be played on the Hampstead ground, the clubs concerned being Cheshunt and R.A.F. (Uxbridge). This will undoubtedly provide a stern and interesting game, worthy the fullest measure of support. Immediately following this match Hampstead's second string will play Blackwall for London League points.
