Match Report

On Christmas morning Hampstead entertained their near friends and rivals, Barnet, in the Athenian League, and the Hampstead team should be complimented on putting up such a good show, seeing that they had to field six reserves, whereas Barnet were at full strength with the exception of Powell for Sutton at right-half.

Hampstead attacked strongly at the start, and with a little luck they might have taken the lead. On one occasion, Manners, who has the makings of an ideal centre-forward, beat Goodwin with a fine header, but luckily for Barnet, Garrett was standing on the goal-line and headed clear, and again Goodwin was only just in time to push the ball round a post for a corner, after he had been told by one of his colleagues to let it go.

It was left, however, for Sparrow, who was standing unmarked, to open the score for Barnet with a good shot which gave Trevers, in the Hampstead goal, no chance to save. Half-time arrived with Barnet leading by this goal.

After the interval Hampstead tried hard to reduce the lead, but after Lane had put Barnet further ahead from a pass by Aldous, it was apparent that the experience of the Barnet team was telling its tale on Hampstead, with such a number of reserves, but nevertheless, they put up a wonderful show.

For Hampstead Trevers, in goal, and Pease, at centre-half, were the pick of a hard-working team, whilst Garrett, Sparrow and Aldous played well for Barnet.
