Match Report

Hampstead played home and away Athenian League games with Wealdstone and carried out a home fixture with Hayes during the Christmas holidays, the result being a division of the spoils.

The game at Wealdstone on Christmas morning opened sensationally, as Hampstead, straight from the kick-off, went down the field, and from a header which fell at his feet, Evans scored easily.

Not disheartened by this early reverse, Wealdstone pressed heavily, some fine centres from both their wingers, Groves and Maskell, getting near home. From a free kick for Hampstead, Berry sent in a fine centre, to which Evans applied his head, only to see the ball pass just over the bar.

Wealdstone equalised when, from a clever run and centre by Groves, Spurr headed past Smith. A few minutes later a miskick by Davies, Wealdstone's left back, let in Voicke, who placed Hampstead in front again after 30 minutes play. From a free kick in the goalmouth against Poulson for carrying, Hampstead nearly scored again, a fine drive by Evans being neatly cleared by Poulson for a corner. From 20 yards out, Maskell scored to equalise the scores again.

In the second half Hampstead were on the defensive for a considerable time, the forwards being unable to make any move towards the Wealdstone goal. Shots from the Wealdstone forwards were cleared in all directions by Smith, Dean and Stimpson. When Hampstead broke away a perfect centre by Berry and a good shot by Evans just skimmed the crossbar. From a fine pass down the centre of the field by Shorland, Bowyer dribbled the ball, and passing to Hoskins, saw that player put Wealdstone ahead for the first time. Immediately afterwards, from a scramble in the Hampstead goalmouth, Groves scored Wealdston's fourth. A forward pass by Butland saw Berry put across a centre to Edwards, who with a first-time shot had Poulson beaten, only to see Shorland kick out while standing on the goal line. From another scrimmage in Hampstead's goalmouth, Hoskins scrambled in the fifth goal for Wealdstone. Wealdstone still continued to press, but Hampstead's defence held out, Wealkdstone running out winners by 5 goals to 2.

Outstanding players for Hampstead were Smith, Dean, Young, Butland and Evans; for Wealdstone Shorland, Maskell, Groves and Brown were the pick.
