Match Report

Golders Green's last home game of the season was played partly in a thunderstorm on Saturday. The flashing of lightning, the rolling of thunder and the torrential rain seemed to act as a tonic to the Golders Green team, because they scored a victory of five goals to one over Sutton in an Athenian League game.

The ground was very slippery and caused some miskicking and sliding which caused a great deal of laughter with the crowd.

For over half-an-hour there was little of interest in the game, then suddenly Knott scored from a penalty, and within five minutes another two goals had been added, giving Golders Green a most satisfactory lead. During the second half Knott scored two more goals before Sutton netted the ball.

It was definitely Golders Green's game, although at times Sutton looked dangerous.

The kick-off took place in a downpour and for some minutes the play was in midfield, both forward lines passing on to the other in an endeavour to find an opening. Finally a weak piece of play by Ellis, right-back for Golders Green, gave Sutton an opportunity to make a raid on the home team's goal. They could not do much, however, before the attack was stifled, and Knott, breaking away, made a dangerous assault on Sutton's goal and almost scored. Sutton's outside-right retaliated with a breakaway on his own account and with an open goal before him shot weakly and threw away a good chance. Golders Green returned to the attack and Boston and Knott were soon harrying the Sutton goalkeeper.

Golders Green's first goal came from a penalty which was taken by Knott. Two minutes later Boston scored a fine goal. The ball went right across the goalmouth and in at the corner. A moment or two later, after some good work by Drinkwater, Knott netted the ball for a third time.

This gave Golders Green a safe lead by half-time and immediately after the change-over they were pressing once more. Sutton, however, continued to battle gamely and one fine shot was just saved by Smith, who made a brilliant effort. A few moments later he was at work again. This state of affairs was not allowed to last very long and Golders Green had soon dislodged the attackers and were themselves advancing on Sutton's goal. The ball went across from Spalton to Breagan and then to Knott, who finally found the net with a strong shot.

Golders Green now settled down to steady pressing and the Sutton goalkeeper was kept busy. The forwards were peppering him with good strong shots. Finally Knott, after a short period of midfield play, broke away on his own, ran up the field and sent in a good shot. Bedford saved, but Knott shot again and scored.

Sutton's centre-forward, Tarrant, took revenge a few minutes later when he copied Knott and running through, opened Sutton's account. Smith had no chance to save.

The home team again found the net through Boston, who, however, was declared to be offside.

The Golders Green team seemed much more at home on the slippery ground than were the visitors. Knott, who took Evans's place at centre-forward, did his full share of the work and made many of those clever moves which we have come to expect from him now.

Boston's work at outside-left was decidedly good. It may be recalled that, playing at Redhill some months ago, he made a remarkable debut for Golders Green, and it has been a matter of regret that he has not been able to assist the club regularly. On Saturday's form he would undoubtedly be an acquisition. Apart from scoring the best goal of the match, his centres were a great factor in the victory.

Spalton, Breagan and Drinkwater, the other forwards, also played satisfactorily. Bucci, the captain, was doing his job thoroughly at centre-half, and Broadis, reported unfit, was not missed as much as was first expected. Weeks and Rowe gave good support. Ellis, Richardson and Smith completed a strong defence.
