Match Report

Golders Green registered their most decisive victory for a long time past on Saturday, when they beat Bushey United by nine goals to none in the extra-preliminary [qualifying] round of the F.A. Cup at Claremont Road. Last season they scored 10 goals against Enfield in a League match, but Enfield got one.

Bushey, a Spartan League team (not in the Premier Division), made a brave but poor show, and but for some smart work in goal by Morton might have provided Golders Green with a record total.

In justice to Bushey, it may be said that they were without J.H. Cochran, an inside-right who is said to be a class player. He might have vitalised the forward l;ine, which was much weaker than one expects to find in a club competing in the F.A. Cup. On the other hand, Golders Green were without A. Breagan and T.E. Evans, which impaired the front rank, but as nine goals were scored this point need not be laboured. Marrable again proved a good substitute for Evans, and, as in the previous week, scored one goal. Breagan's place was taken by A. Reay, of the Reserves, whose value to the side was not commensurate with the energy shown. He might have done better on the left wing, where he played for the Reserves against Barnet.

The other divisions of Golders Green's team were unchanged, and for the second match in succession the defence was unbeaten. Kimber, in goal, had many long spells of idleness, and in order to find work the backs were often near the half-way line. Even then they found little to do, the half-back trio never having their strength fully tested.

This, of course, does not mean that Bushey were always on the defence, but the occasions when the Golders Green goal was seriously menaced were few, and the home side would have scored even more frequently had the Bushey men done more attacking. It is difficult to find the net through a ruck of players.

Speaking of the halves, we must congratulate them upon finding their best form so early. It has been particularly noticeable in Bucci, the captain, and we are glad to make this statement because we have heard it said quite often that he is a back number. That is not so, and we prefer him playing for Golders Green than against them.

Golders Green's forward work left something to be desired. This may seem churlish in view of the result, but it cannot be forgotten that although they had practically all the play, they did not score until twenty minutes from the kick-off, and in the second half they played for twenty-five minutes without result.

The return of T. Evans will undoubtedly strengthen the side, but for the time being it would be well to persevere with Duffield at centre-forward. He has scored twice in each of the games played, and his speed and an ability to turn sharply round to shoot are assets.

For cleverness there is no one in the Golders Green team to beat J. Browne, but much of his clever work is wasted because very often his final touch goes to an opponent. He also shows hesitancy in taking shots himself. We know he can shoot, and shoot powerfully, and no one would accuse him of greediness if he tested a goalkeeper more frequently.

A feature of Saturday's match was the shooting of F. Boston at outside-left. He scored three goals and was partly responsible for another, one of his shots being headed through by an opponent. Never have we seen him kicking with such power. It was some time before he could find his mark, and indeed it was close on half-time before he was successful. This was the fourth goal of the match, the others having been scored by Marrable, Broadis and Duffield. Broadis's was a fine effort, and a lesson to others on how to shoot. Until then the forward work had been disa;ppointing. Duffield's goal came from a long shot by W. Boston, Duffield taking the ball on the run and beating the goalkeeper, who had the ill-fortune to slip when running out. By the way, the heavy rain just before the match handicapped the players a good deal.

It was in the second half, however, that we saw F. Boston at his best. For twenty-five minutes Golders Green had, with but brief intervals, been hovering around the United's goal without effect. Much of the shooting was poor; and knowing victory was out of the question, Bushey concentrated on making the defeat as light as possible.

At length F. Boston brought Golders Green's score up to five with a fine shot, and from that moment he was always in the picture. So hard was his shooting that ambulance men had to be calle upon to give first-aid treatmnt to a person who, standing near the goal-post, had received a hard blow with the ball as it came from Boston's foot from near the touch-line. After that there were cries of "Take cover!" when Boston was ready to shoot.

When Bloxham had scored the sixth goal after much persistency, Duffield should have registered the seventh from a centre by Boston, it being an easy chance. However, the next goal (from Boston) was not long in coming, what in by-gone days was known as a pile-driver beating Morton completely.

The eighth goal came from another shot by Boston, the ball being headed through by Hughes (Bushey's left-back), and the ninth and last was placed to the credit of Duffield who, running half-length of the field, shot into an open net, Morton having run out in the hope of averting defeat.

Golders Green tried hard to reach double figures, but this honour was denied them.

Those who are not satisfield unless the team they fancy win heavily were probably pleased with the result. To the majority of the 1,300 present, however, the match was too one-sided to be attractive. Golders Green were never extended, and the score, though heavy, did not flatter them.
