Match Report

Golders Green's performance at Hertford suggested that they are overdoing the youth experiment. Stroud has been given a fair trial by now without achieving anything very brilliant, and young Heath, at left-back, was not very good value, though he certainly has the makings of a footballer in him. It is fair to say that Golders Green suffered by injuries to W. Boston and Breagan, but the whole team were below form and played as if they regarded Hertford Town as of no importance. The result was a shock for the visitors .

Ward was missing from Golders Green owing to an accident in the black-out on Friday, and he was badly missed.

Golders Green promised well in the opening minutes, when Tomlinson, slipping out on the left wing, centred for Cochrane to shoot, but the left-back headed away and play swung to the other end, where Whybrow shot across the goal-mouth. Golders Green appeared to be taking things too easily and the defence invited trouble in this way. They could have been the stronger side, but were not at home on the ground and Hertford could be very dangerous in their breakaways. Stroud was slow in some of his movements, but Fontana went near when he screwed in a shot which James headed out.

A weak display by the defence, who were often leaving Lovell to deal with the attack alone, led to Hertford opening the score after 20 minutes, Brown getting in an easy shot from a pass by Whybrow.

Golders Green put a little more life into the game after this reverse and Powell had to save from Coleman and Stroud. Tomlinson headed a centre from Stroud, but it gave Powell no trouble.

There was no real punch in the game and Golders Green were soon handicapped by an injury to W. Boston, who went to outside-right, Stroud moving to inside-right, Fontana to right-half, and Bucci to right-back, Breagan coming over to left-half.

Half-time arrived with Hertford holding their one-goal lead.

Golders Green put on some pressure after the interval and Powell had one or two shots to deal with, but though there was good individual forward play, the team never got going together and after 10 minutes Todd got clear away to score Hertford's second while Golders Green stood waiting for the whistle to go for offside.

Coleman and Fontana brightened the Green's hopes a bit, but Coleman's shot was pushed up by the goal-keeper and Fontana struck the post. Cochrane had hard luck with a ground shot and another from Coleman brought the goalkeeper down, but he saved at the expense of a corner.
