Match Report

Golders Green won the Will Mather Cup last Saturday, for the first time since the trophy was presented to them in the 1937-38 season, for an annual competition in aid of the Manor House Hospital.

The Green defeated Tufnell Park at Claremont Road by two goals to one after extra time.

Early in the game C. Street, Golders Green's outside-left, missed a golden scoring chance from a few yards out, but after this things eased off, and the first half was comparatively quiet, neither side scoring.

Following the interval Golders Green attacked. Two corners were forced, and a fine centre by Bucci went begging before the Park broke away and Rayment shot wide. Then, after eight minutes' play, Bucci beat two men and passed to Pulling, who went forward, side-stepped the advancing Desborough, and scored to give the Green the lead.

Tufnell Park went all out for the equaliser, and it came after 25 minutes, during which no fewer than three shots had hit post or cross-bar and rebounded into play.
A good corner kick had been taken by Williams from which Randall scored.

Full time came with the scores even, extra time being decided upon in an endeavour to reach a result. The only goal came after 10 minutes of the first period when Stroud, beating Fennell, put in to Breagan, and from his pass Pulling scored with a "first-timer," which gave Desborough no chance.

The Green were without Fontana, who is now serving in the Navy, and Goodchild had not recovered from his leg injury. V. Clark deputised successfully at right-half, Breagan moving up to inside-right. The outside-left berth was filled by C. Street.
